Electric motor assist has become quite popular and more and more offerings are showing up. There are two basic ways to go … 1) a hub motor in the rear wheel … and 2) a crank drive motor some incorrectly call a mid drive motor. There are pros and cons to both types. I have written about this previously. Click HERE to read it. And HERE is a similar posting to this one.  In this posting I am not writing about electric motor assist. I am merely posting videos about them. If you want to read any or all of the several postings of the past about electric motor assist click HERE. The videos below will give you some idea of the various options available to motorize your trike. Some are trikes which come with motors while others are motors which can be added to an existing trike. And yes, any trike can be motorized. It is not necessary to buy a new trike.

BTW … below is a picture of a true MID drive motor setup …

As you can see the motor is located in the middle between the pedals and the rear wheel … thus it is called mid drive. Motors that are mounted in the bottom bracket of a bicycle or tadpole trike are technically CRANK drive not mid drive.

  1. I suggest that you add an evaluation of the Ridekick motorized trailer which is being reinterduced in 2020. I have enjoyed my 6 year old model. It does have some disadvantages along with it’s many positive attributes.

  2. I have an ICE Adventure HD with a BionX 500DX pedal assist system. In my experience, I prefer a rear hub pedal assist system, considering the length of the chain and the stress an electric drive puts on it Being pushed is a better system than being pulled. I love the BionX but unfortunately when my battery dies that will be the end and I’ll in all likelihood need a new trike with a new pedal assist system. I hope that in the next year or two there will be even better systems created and available for recumbent trikes!

    1. You can have the battery rebuilt. There are places around that do this. Several sources are shown by simply Googling it. Rebuilding one is cheaper than buying a brand new one. Also there is a company who bought out most of the existing BionX parts when BionX went out of business. They sell them online. I don’t know how many batteries they have to sell and how long they will have them. Here is one company I found … https://www.amegoev.com/parts/bionx-kits-and-parts/ … I don’t think they sell batteries however other than those which come with a motor conversion kit. Here is one which shows batteries … https://ohmcycles.com/search?q=bionx+batteries … They also have other BionX parts for sale. Lastly here is the one I was thinking of … https://www.bx-legacy.com/
