BUT I DON’T FEEL LIKE GETTING GOING

The weather sure makes a difference in how motivated I am to get myself out riding. I guess it has to be this global warming thing. Yep, it is so warm that most days this Spring have been and continue to be below normal. I went out yesterday and nearly froze out there. I need to dress for winter weather not spring weather. I am waiting for it to warm up before leaving each day but there is a problem. It is failing to warm up. Even the warmest part of the day is several degrees below what is normal for this time of year. And to make matters worse we have had some “teaser days” with the high temperatures in the 70 and even 80s, but the very next day it is back to much cooler weather.

This obviously is meant to be funny but it is not far from the truth. Of course, it is based on computer life. I used to see a lot of this back when I used Microcrap … I mean Microsoft Windows. Years ago I switched to Linux Mint and all the headaches that come with Windows are gone. With Windows there was something gone wrong to deal with almost constantly.

Some of you live in places where you can identify with what I am saying. Well, April is almost over with. We will see what May brings in the weather dept. Right now I need to go bundle up as if it were still winter if I am going to go riding today. 65 degrees is the normal high for this time of year. We are having weather 15 to 20 degrees below that. And we have been having quite a bit of wind as well so the “feels like” temperatures have been like winter days. It gets a guy down and is hard to deal with. There are times when I wish I could kick myself in the butt. Instead I sit down in the recliner chair and soon may be dreaming about nicer weather. If I were a rich man I may be living down in Florida but then the daily high temperatures are already hotter than I care for. I bet they don’t have any freeze warnings overnight like we do.

There are places around where the weather is pleasant but they lack trails to ride on.. I am not afraid to ride on roads with cars and trucks but I definitely prefer paved trails. Smooth winding paved shady trails and 70- 75 degree weather … AH, perfect in my book.

                                                  Toledo, Ohio bike trail

Recently I was at my LBS (local bike shop) and talked with the service manager. He told me business has been very slow due to the lousy Spring weather we have been having. Normally they are quite busy at this time of year as people are getting their bikes ready to ride. I know I seldom see any other cyclists out on the trails when the weather is not so nice.

It will be interesting to see if we just sort of skip Spring and mover right into Summer. I certainly hope not but it has happened before. Nap time for me and then I will be bundling up to go out for a ride.

BIONX … OUT OF BUSINESS BUT STILL AROUND … WELL, SORTA’

I was very surprised to discover that even though the well known and popular BionX e-motor company went out of business a few years ago one can still buy their products. And the good news is the cost is about half of what it was originally. Of course, there is no manufacturer warranty or service available . How long these sources will be available is anybody’s guess. The source I was looking at came with everything except the digital display. If the customer wanted it it would have to be ordered separately.

Some parts are still available so there is a glimmer of hope for those who have a BionX system. I searched for BionX and found several sources to buy their motor kits. Some sources are even selling unlocked motors which will allow the rider to go faster than the 20 mph speed limiter built into the system. I would like that. One can also buy just the hub motor and have it laced into their own rear wheel. Both the 350 watt and the 500 watt motors are available. BionX had a good product but they priced themselves too high which led to their demise. There was a lot of competition coming on the scene for a lot less money. You can only get away with selling at much higher prices for so long before it catches up to you.

RAIN SNOW WIND & OCASSIONALLY A NICE DAY

It is that time of year. The weather is all over the place. One day can be in the high 60s and the next day only in the high 30s. Lots of rain but also snow coming down. And the wind … even on those high 60s days it is often quite windy. It makes for interesting trike riding. And definitely it is like playing Russian Roulette with our health as it is all too easy to get a cold and/or cough if we venture out for a ride. But I don’t let that stop me. Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead! Well, maybe half speed. We dare not ignore the wind chill factor. And there is yet another factor … a wife who forbids me to go out riding out of concern for my health. It is interesting that it is ok for me to go out riding on a winter day with temperatures in the 30s but come Springtime with fluctuating temperatures … nope … no can do. Sometimes I truly envy bachelors. Tomorrow is another day … just like I have been talking about … with below normal temperatures and definitely a bit windy. But hey, I am planning on going riding and do my best to …

ENJOY THE RIDE!

Yep, I am trying my best to  …

TIRES FOR LESS

One thing is for sure. Tires are a consumable. They wear out and need to be replaced. I am constantly coming across people who pay “full price” or nearly so for their tires. And some people don’t believe me when I tell them what I pay for my tires … often less than half of what they pay. I am no one special. I don’t get any better deal than what anybody else can get. It just takes a little bit of time and effort to find sources offering great prices. One person recently said that they buy their tires on Amazon as if that ensures they get the lowest prices. Actually I have never seen good prices for tires on Amazon or Ebay. And rarely do I see any good prices for tires on any source here in the United States. I have consistently found them from sources in Europe, especially Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom. Right now with the world economy such as it is with high inflation going on the tire prices are not quite as good as they were. However, one can still find some good deals. At this time the best I have found is Bikeinn in Spain. Some other sources I have used in the past are: BikeDiscount in Germany Bike24 in Germany Merlin Cyclery in United Kingdom. One more comes mind although they don’t always have as good of a price as these others. I am referring to BikeTiresDirect.com in the U.S.  Right now their price is $34.99 with free shipping.

Yes, there is oftentimes shipping charges to pay, but even with those charges figured in the price per tire is still a bargain compared to what one usually finds elsewhere. I have had people boast to me about the price they just paid for some tires. It was ten dollars or more higher per tire than what I have been paying right along. As an example … in the past for 20 by 1.75 Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires (47-406) I have typically paid $24 to $28 per tire including shipping. BTW, in the past at least one source offered free shipping on orders over $75. I always buy 3 or 4 tires at a time. Sometimes I order for a friend and save him a lot of money. You can easily see that if a certain tire costs $24 and there is a $22 shipping charge it is cheaper per tire to order 3 or 4 at a time. Otherwise one tire costs $46. Three tires would be $31.33 per tire. Four tires would be $29.50 per tire. I can’t say how many tires you can order for their stated shipping charge. The most I have ever ordered at one time was 4. I am sure if you went over a certain weight the shipping cost would increase. And speaking of shipping charges increasing … like everything else nowadays, yes, they are higher now. And as we know all over the world we are dealing with shortages and delays. Usually the sources I use have had the tires in stock but nowadays sometimes they are out of stock. Of course, at their low prices they sell a lot. Bike24 has a really good price on Marathon Plus tires right now ($22.70), but they are out of stock. That does not include shipping but since they are out of stock I can’t find out what the shipping is. The MSRP on the Marathon Plus tires is about $47, I think. Seems like it used to be about $54. It is hard to believe that they lowered it. Anyway, you can order them from Amazon for $47.54 saving 10% they say … or … you can wise up and stop paying full price or nearly so by doing what I do.

I do ask one thing … please don’t accuse me of lying to people about the prices I pay for tires. That more less happened recently and I didn’t appreciate it.

BTW, anyone who is interested in trying Vee tires Bikeinn has them really cheap … $4 to $8 per tire plus shipping costs. I could not believe my eyes as I looked thru their tires and saw those prices.

Oh yes, one last thing … service as in customer service. I have always been pleased with the service I have received from each of these companies I have dealt with. They usually send out the tires the same day or next day after ordering them. Occasionally they get held up in U.S. Customs longer than should be necessary. And, of course, right now shipping is delayed some all over the world. But hey, that’s life!

RESURRECTION SUNDAY

HALLELUJAH! It is resurrection Sunday! Three days passed by after Jesus was willingly hung on a cross spilling His precious innocent blood to pay the penalty for the sins of man and providing forgiveness for those who accept what God alone could and did do for us. He paid a debt He did not owe. I owed a debt I could not pay. I needed someone to wash my sin away. My life was in rebellion to the God Who created me and loves me. I had lived the first 30 years of my life in that rebellion totally rejecting Him. I went so far in my hardheartedness that I totally denied His existence. I was an atheist … unapproachable. No one could talk to me about anything spiritual. I was like this one kid in this Chick tract entitled One Way.

BTW, out of all of the Chick tracts this is one of my very favorites. It is almost all pictures and illustrates the truth of what has happened to mankind as far as sin entering the world and its consequences.

I have shared my personal testimony previously so I won’t rewrite it again here.

Anyway, if you are like I was … if you get upset when someone tries to share anything spiritual with you I understand … been there, done that … as they say. Just hang in there. If God can manage to get thru to you I assure you will have no regrets. He wants to set you free and help you to find Truth which will set you free. We are either In Adam (lost) or In Christ (saved). Here is the difference:

Accepting and receiving Jesus Christ wiil totally transform us from what we have made of ourselves into what God wants us to become and with His help we can become. Time is short. We are living in the very Last Days and the return of Jesus in imminent.

For more than 2000 years He has offered us His grace with the opportunity for our salvation. But that will all soon change. Procrastination is a very dangerous game to play!  First of all none of have the assurance of our next breath and heartbeat. Dying apart from Christ and what He alone can provide … the forgiveness of our sins …means that our eternal fate is sealed. Heaven or hell are real and they are our only two choices. And we have already made our choice. God knows our hearts. Our fate is already sealed. That being said, today you have the opportunity to choose Him and change your fate.

TODAY, if you hear His voice, do not harden your heart. You may never have another opportunity.

What will you do with this great sacrifice? Right now you have the opportunity to choose life … choose Jesus.

It is not complicated but it is quite difficult. It is hard because it involves dealing with our pride, humbling ourselves and repenting. We must come to God on His terms.

God has a free gift awaiting you.

A FREE GIFT awaits you!

Jesus loves you. He loves you so much that He stretched out His arms to hang on a tree just to prove His great love. Yes, He did this for you while you were still rebelling against Him. There is no greater demonstration of love to be found anywhere. We should …

If we live our lives like this we will most likely will be part of the next event known as the rapture of the church when Jesus comes back to get those He has redeemed. This will happen just before God begins His judgement upon the earth and those who will be here … left behind rejecting Him.

Don’t be left behind. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Jesus is returning soon! He came the first time to provide salvation. He is coming the next time to pour out His wrath and anger on those who reject that salvation.

RIDING FLAT FREE

Starting in 2009 when I bought my Catrike Trail which came with Schwalbe Marathon Racer tires I started experiencing numerous flat tires. From there I tried other Schwalbe tires … Kojaks, Marathons,  and Trykers. The Tryker tires were the worst of the bunch. With all of them I contained to have nemerous flats. Finally I decided to try tire liners which helped but I still got a few flats, especially “internal flats” … flats which were caused by something inside of the tire rather than a puncture or cut from the outside. It turned out to be the tire liners which caused the internal flats.

Finally I decided to try the tire I had been hearing about … the Schwalbe Marathon Plus. I made the foolish decision to use the tire liners inside of them. I guess my thinking was they add an extra measure of flat protection and I already have them so I might as well use them. Big mistake as once again I had internal flats. I removed the tire liners and never had anymore flats. I am sold on the Marathon Plus tires as being the best tire money can buy. They not only offer great flat protection but they wear excellent as well. I got phenominal mileage out of them.  I used them for many years until I decided to go the route of balloon tires. I knew of the Big Apple tires but upon reading about them I found out about the Big Ben tires. And with further reading I found out about Big Ben Plus tires. They too offer some flat protection similar to Marathon Plus but they offer  a lesser amount of protection. I decided to give them a try and have been using them since. I love them. I have never had a flat with them either.

I do use a heavy duty inner tube inside of them as there is plenty of room inside for them. They don’t wear nearly as good as the Marathon Plus tires but the ride and handling I really like. I keep reordering them so it is not likely I will change back to my beloved Marathon Plus tires anytime soon. Like so many things tire technology has came a long ways over the years.

Even some of the other tires like Marathons now have some flat protection built into them. It is so nice to ride and not have to deal with any flats.

TWO WAYS TO DESTROY A PERFECTLY GOOD REAR DERAILLEUR

In the picture above the chain is too short and the rear derailleur is stretched out too far with no more available movement left. In this scenario the rear derailleur can be damaged … bent from not having any more movement available. This is one of two ways that come to mind when it comes to damaging the rear derailleur.

The other way is to try to pedal  without first down shifting into a low enough gear. Applying brute force on a pedal trying to move when in too high of a gear can result in making a pretzel out of your rear derailleur. One needs to be very careful not to “force” the rear derailleur as they just are not designed to take such abuse. Sometimes a rear deraileur can be bent back straightening it out to where it will work. However, sometimes one can work and work on it and never get it to shift properly again. Sometimes ya just got to bite the bullet and toss it in the scrap pile and install a new one. I had that happen to me once with a very expensive rear deraileur which was almost brand new. I had picked up a small tree limb about 5/8 of an inch in diameter. It went right into my rear derailleur and spokes doing a lot of damage. I straightened it out the best I could but it never worked right after that and I was forced to replace it. The main problem was the hangar had gotten bent and stretched out. I staraighted it but because it had stretched it would not go back to the right position and alignment. It required replacement. Needless to say, it didn’t make my day.

WILLOUGHBY, NEXT STOP WILLOUGHBY

I am sure many of us will remember the episode of Twilight Zone entitleld “A Stop at Willoughby” from 1960. It was about an overstressed executive named Gart Williams who seeks escape from his troubles by napping on the commuter train he takes to go home and awakening, in dreams, on a very different train; an elegant, wood paneled car of a steam train peacefully rolling into the idyllic little town of Willoughby. What does this have to do with tadpole trikes you ask? Absolutely nothing! And then again … well, just maybe we too could enter the Twilight Zone while riding our trikes in so much comfort.

I mean if we are not careful it could happen. We could be riding along so relaxed  that we  border on falling asleep and entering our own dream world. The only problem is we are not running on rails so likely we would soon end up in big trouble as we leave the roadway or trail we are riding on. And then sudden reality takes over awakening us from La-La land. Obviously we best not ever let than happen. We need to stay awake and alert and do our snoozing when in the living room recliner and not our mobile recliner known as our recumbent tadpole trikes. They are comfortable enough we could get confused as to which one we are sitting in. I joke all the time about riding my trike saying that the hardest part of riding it is trying to stay awake. Yes, I joke about it, but isn’t far from the truth. I have come very close to falling asleep while pedaling along. If no harm would come of it I would be very tempted to allow it to happen, but I know better than that. It only happens on screen in movies and tv shows. In real life where the rubber meets the road our bodies all too often do too. If you want to stop at Willoughby do it the safe way …HERE  . While riding your trike do all you can to stay awake and keep safe. Don’t let the comfort you experience lull you to sleep or you may be entering the Twilight Zone.

I doubt very much if the end result would be the discovery of  Willoughby. It is most likely non-existent. You are more likely to end up like the man in this televison show. His stepping off of the train into Willoughby did not result in what he was dreaming. Not at all. Besides we all want to …

Gart Williams longed for Willoughby but had a hard rude awakening when he exited the train to go there. It is the same for anyone who does not have their ticket to exit this train we are all on called life on earth. A rude awakening awaits those who don’t have the ticket the Conductor offers freely.

CYGOLITE HOTSHOT PRO TAILLIGHTS

Thru the passing years I have tried a number of different headlights and taillights. Some were near the best available at the time I bought them but as time passed other lights came along which were superior to what I had already bought and had been using. That’s the way the cookie crumbles as they say. Or as a good friend used to say … “you’ll have that!” I have not been much of a fan of USB rechargeable lights for a couple of reasons … 1) the charge often does not last long enough and when it is depleted the light no longer works. It this happens in the middle of a ride it leaves you without a working light. And 2) I have experienced too much trouble with the USB charging ports going bad and the  charging cable plug no longer plugging into the light leaving me with no way to recharge it. So I have purposely stayed clear of most USB rechargeable lights. I do have  6 or 7 rechargeable taillights at this time. One of them is difficult to recharge because of this problem mentioned. Just today I received a new light to replace the one I am having trouble with. This is a  quality control problem in manufacturing as far as I am concerned. From brand new out of the box there were problems with the USB port. I like and want bright flashing taillights and headlights on my trike as I want to be seen. I rarely ever ride at night so I don’t need an extremely bright headlight so I can see where I am going. I just need lights that others can readily see in the daytime. Besides rechargeable lights I also have lights that run on AA and AAA batteries. For taillights I like the Niterider Cherry Bomb 35. I use my Cygolite Hotshot Pro 150 taillights as my main taillights but if they should fail during a ride I have the battery powered lights to use and I carry extra batteries along with me should they fail. Cygolite Hotshot Pro taillights are offered in different brightnesses. When I first bought mine the most powerful one they had was 150 lumens. Since then they have come out with 200 as well as 250. The 150 is plenty bright so I never bought a 200 or 250. They not only cost more but the charge in these models don’t last as long as the 150. I think they come in 50, 80, 100, 150, 200 and 250 lumens. I know one needs to be careful when shopping for them online. You may be looking up 150 but the search results often show other powers and you many not notice this when looking at the search results.

I have changed my light configuration several times over the years. Just recently I made a major change in the taillight dept. I removed all of the battery powered lights and just have the rechargeable lights now. Even the BV 35 lumen taillights are very bright and would do the job all by themselves. They are just smaller than I care for plus the charge doesn’t last long enough in them. They came free with my headlights so the price was right.

TAKING OUR K9 FRIENDS ALONG FOR THE RIDE

I used to take our dog with me on rides. Unfortunately that ended as he developed health issues and was suffering so we had to make the hard decision to put him down.

A few years have passed and now we have a new puppy. So far he is not taking to riding with me as well as our first dog did. Our first dog would ride in an open basket just fine but this new puppy can’t be trusted. He will jump out. So something was needed to ensure that doesn’t happen. I came across this Sunlite basket with a top cage on it. It is working great thus far but I am concerned our puppy will all too quickly outgrow it. Hopefully if that happens I can go back to using the other basket I have hoping he will ride in it and  no longer try to jump out. Time will tell.

This basket is made to mount on a rear rack. It has quick release spring loaded clamps that hold it onto the rack. Of course, this is only good for small dogs. If you have a larger dog then you will need some other way to accommodate him or her. Probably the most practical thing is using a trailer. But if this basket appeals to you there are several sources where it can be purchased. Modern bike advertises the cheapest but they add on a $25 shipping charge. Whatever you decide to do enjoy the ride and having your dog(s) along. And …

FACEBOOK GROUPS FOR COMRADERY & HELPFUL INFORMATION & INTERACTION

Finding a Facebook Group about recumbent tadpole trikes is about like trying to find a cold medication at the pharmacy. There are just so many to select from one is overwhelmed. And, of course, some are better than others. Some are far better while some are not so good. I am not here to make recommendations or rate any of these groups. Obviously it is not practical to join a whole lot of them. One thing I will say … just because one group has over 7000 members while another group only has 123 members is not necessarily a sure way to select a group. One would think it would be and should be but my experience tells me otherwise.  One thing I have learned the administrator(s)/moderator(s) make a big difference. I quit one group because I could not tolerate the lousy job the administrator was doing. I found I had no use for the guy. Constantly butting heads with him I finally had enough. I miss the group but I sure don’t miss him. Facebook groups need rules that everybody needs to abide by. There are always those who won’t and don’t obey the rules and thus cause problems for the group. A good administrator stays on top of this and disciplines members or removes them from membership. In these groups one will find seasoned knowledgeable experienced trike riders who can and do share what they know with others who are newbies or just not as experienced and knowledgeable. Those who have questions and issues can get help in these groups. I highly recommend joining a few. I have two Facebook groups I have started concerning tadpole trikes. I even have a third group which is on Cloudhub which is an alternative to Facebook. Cloudhub just never caught on. My Cloudhub Recumbent Trikes Group only has 4 members. My first Facebook group I started years ago was Tadpole Rider Group. It quickly grew to the second largest FB groups about recumbent trikes. Due to health reasons at the time I made the decision to shut it down. Years later the health issue no longer existed and I made the decision to restart it. This time around, however, it never took off like it did the first time. Over the last few weeks it (Tadpole Rider Group)  has doubled in membership but still it is only about 283 as I type this. There would be more but one ongoing problem I am experiencing is that several of those wanting to join are not answering the two vetting questions as well as agreeing to obey the group rules. Without this they won’t be approved to join. I hate turning away people who want to join but it is necessary to have these questions to help weed out SPAMMERS, ROBOTS and other unwanted applicants. If you are a Facebook user and don’t belong to a FB trike group at this time I invite you to look into it. You can simply do a search on FB for recumbent trike groups. Enjoy the interaction with fellow trikers. And most certainly …
