THANKS FOR SWEETHEARTS

REPOSTED FROM LAST YEAR …

Hey, it is that time … sweethearts day. Why we observe it in mid winter instead of during nice weather I don’t understand. This picture shown above isn’t possible around here where I live. The snow and ice on the ground won’t permit it. So we must come up with other ways to observe Valentine’s Day. Even if we could ride on trikes riding side by side on a trail can cause issues for other trail users.

Even riding side by side on the same trike could be a problem as the trike may be too wide. It is a nice thought though.

This might work but it is not a trike … and no smoochin’ on this machine. Hopefully these two are not sweethearts. And thankfully these two below are. Otherwise I would probably have a black eye and large bump on my head.

I would rather smooch with my sweetheart inside anyway. Hope you have a happy sweetheart’s day.

And try to  …

RIDE TO ARRIVE — A PARODY

If you are looking for something a bit different … you have found it. Or maybe I should say I found it and am posting it here. I don’t follow what this man is making a parody of so I can’t really identify with this video. However, it is different. It appears to be well done so hopefully you will enjoy it. I like the “three finger greeting” at the end. I think we ought to start greeting one another like that. Who knows … maybe it would catch on all over the world among tadpole riders.

SORRY TO REPORT THAT DAVID NO LONGER RIDES A TRIKE

I just learned that our fellow tadpole trike rider, David Goldman, has passed away Nov. 22nd. losing his battle with cancer. I am saddened to hear this as David was such an inspiration and encourager to others to do what they can to exercise and improve their lives. He created many YouTube videos and established quite a following. I always enjoyed watching his videos and found I almost always agreed with him. He started a trike ride over in Illinois last year called the DRAT Ride. Can you guess what DRAT stands for?  Quite a few showed up. It is my hope the ride will be continued annually in his memory and honor.

Here is David’s last video from 2 weeks ago …

My condolences go out to David’s wife, family and close friends. David will be missed. Although I never met him persoanally I considered him a friend. Being a fellow triker we held that in common. I have several posts about David on this website.

Here is his video of the DRAT group ride:

Below is a video featuring David as a guest on Gary Solomon’s LaidBackBikeReport. David shares a lot about what he has been thru and how riding his trike has helped him immensely.

HERE is another triker’s (Greg Garduno) tribute to David. And HERE is another one of Greg’s videos in tribute to David back when David had the DRAT group ride.

‘TOMATERS’ COMIN OUTA MY EARS

Yep, I have got tomatoes coming out of my ears. We used to have our own garden but discontinued it several years ago. Our brother in law puts out a large garden every year and we get a lot of vegetables from them free every year. This equates to not having any need of our own garden. Also I have a friend that lives near one of our local trails I ride frequently. His property is right alongside of the trail.

He puts tomato plants out every year and shares them with several people he knows including me. This picture was taken early on in the season while most of the tomatoes were still green.

I have to admit it is extremely handy to just stop by the side of the trail, grab a plastic bag out of my pocket and start picking delicious ripe tomatoes fresh off of the vine. And they are always far better than can be bought in a grocery store. There are always gobs of tomatoes growing and many go to waste as they fall off the vine onto the ground. We already had gobs of tomatoes from my brother in law so we did not need any more. For some reason not many people seem to be taking advantage of my friend’s generosity. I hate seeing them go to waste so I stop and pick some of his tomatoes. Sadly we are throwing several of them away as they go bad before we are getting them ate. And with cold weather upon us … at least off and on as the seasons change … the tomatoes remaining on the plants are being exposed to freezing. Again, I hate seeing them go to waste but there are far more of them than we could possibly use. The last time I picked a bunch of them I left the bag of them out in the garage. I tell ya, I’ve got tomatoes coming out of my ears. It is a crying shame, surely someone could use them. Well, I am trying to do my part. I am going out to the kitchen to eat some tomatoes. Hopefully, I can get started on the bag out in the garage.

COMMON IS NO LONGER COMMON

And there is much more written about how people will be in the Last Days. Lawlessness will abound! We certainly see it. A person would be a fool to deny it.

One thing that I have noticed over the last several years is that COMMON  is no longer common. Things like common sense, common courtesy and common decency just are not around any more like they used to be. Yep, common is no longer common. Various examples come to mind. Things like friendly greetings not being returned and not keeping one’s dog under control.

And no matter how wide a multi-use trail is people still manage to take up the entire width of it making it impossible for other trail users to pass them. And they think it is okay to do so. They pay no attention to other trail users and move out of the way. It is almost always necessary to say something to them in order to get them to move out of the way. I am talking about a trail that is 24 to 30 feet wide. Whatever happened to common sense?

Dog owners who refuse to obey the law and keep their dog on a leash are often among the worst as they usually have a real bad attitude problem. If you dare say anything to them they explode into a rage calling you nasty names and F-you always comes out of their mouths. Whatever happened to common decency?

Very few bicyclists obey the trail rules and give a proper warning that they intend to overtake you. Instead the go zooming by scaring others half to death. I was raised to be friendly toward everybody. I greet everybody I see. I am amazed at how many people don’t return a friendly greeting. Whatever happened to common courtesy?

Signs of the times is what we are seeing and experiencing. Signs of the End Times, that is. God’s Word tells us that many people will change like this in the Last Days. So we should not be surprised. Many things have changed for the worse. I like the saying … “NORMAL isn’t coming back. JESUS is!” In closing I echo the words of Jesus … do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

CANAL ROUTES

Long before you and I were born there existed transportation canals. They were man made. Most of them are gone now but some of our bike trails have been built along some of them. Here where I live in Fort Wayne, Indiana the Wabash-Erie Canal passed thru.

We have at least 4 local trails that go along the paths of these canals. If I had not researched a little bit about this canal I would have remained totally ignorant of it. The Wabash-Erie Canal pretty much followed along near the Maumee River from Lake Erie near Toledo, Ohio  to Fort Wayne. From Fort Wayne it continued on southwest to the Wabash River and followed it southward until it headed back southeast to the White River. It ended at the Ohio River at Evansville, Indiana for a total distance of 497 miles. Perhaps you noticed that the sign shows the canal as being only 468 miles long instead of the 497 I stated above. I don’t know which is correct, but 497 is what I read online. On the map far above you can see the several canals that used to exist. The picture below shows a typical canal boat used on the canals. They were drawn by a team of horses or mules from the shore alongside of the canals. Those paths were called “towpaths”. There are some modern day trails  which have “Towpath” in their name. We have one right here in Fort Wayne.

The canal was abandoned in 1874, sold in 1877, and its path through Fort Wayne sold in 1881 to the Nickel Plate Railroad for its roadbed. The last boat was seen on the canal in 1882. Historical Society Marker

I read that these draft animals can pull 50 times more weight on a boat in water than they could if it were on  a wagon on land.

Along the Towpath Trail there are still some remains of the canal. I have ridden past there hundreds of times and never realized  this. Just yesteday I found out about it.

For what it is worth right after I composed this article I rode the Towpath Trail again looking for signs of a former canal. I stopped and got off of my trike and walked over to the area shown circled, but I saw no sign of a canal ever being there.

From the St. Joseph River a “feeder canal” was built taking water from the St. Joe River down into downtown Ft. Wayne to provide additional water to the Wabash-Erie Canal. The St. Joseph Pathway and Becketts Run Trail  follow alongside of it in places. I have seen sections of this feeder canal as it is quite obvious.

In the picture above the red line indicates the Saint Joseph Pathway as it passes thru Purdue University property. The yellow line indicates the feeder canal. It runs in a straight line all the way up to where it connected to the St. Joe River further up north of Becketts Run Trail in what used to be called Robinson Park. It is all gone today as it has been made into a housing subdivision. The blue line indicates the west bank of the St. Joe River. The picture below is of the same area. You can see the water filled canal running alongside of the bike trail.

Here is a sign concerning the feeder canal along Becketts Run Trail.

This is a modern day replica of a canal boat. This one is made of aluminum and is used to offer rides to those wanting to take a river cruise aboard it here in Fort Wayne. There is a monetary charge for it. It operates mainly on the Saint Marys River and it docks downtown at Prominade Park.

I find it interesting that the Towpath Trail is named after the towing path alongside the canal used by the horses and mules to pull the canal boats, but there is nothing to see as you ride the trail. If there was a canal out there with banks alongside the horses and mules walked on I sure don’t know where it is and I have ridden it hundreds of times. I have often wondered about it. If anything is there to see I am not aware of it. The next time I ride out on the Towpath Trail I am going to look harder to see if anything is there.

I posted an article awhile back about a tadpole trike ride along the Erie Canal. There are several YouTube videos documenting the ride and the remains of the canal.

I contacted a key person with our trails asking if any map is available that shows the former route of the canal and our trails. I was told that none exist but another person came up with a map in a .pdf file format which I have been unsuccessful in posting here. However, I saved it as a .jpg format which I can post here.

If you live near so that you can get to ride near any of these old canals used to exist you might want to check them out to see what remains of them.

I JUST DON’T SEE IT (the SEARCH BOX that is)

If you use a smartphone rather than a desktop or laptop computer you are missing out on things. On a smartphone you normally only see the one main column of a website. Other columns off to the sides don’t appear. Recently I had a reader of my blog looking for the search feature on TadpoleRider.com. She could not find it. I tried to help her but quickly discovered the problem. She was using a smartphone. In the image below is what TadpleRider.com is suppose to look like. The search box feature in on the far right circled in red.

But when viewed on a smartphone it does not appear the same. Here is a captured screenshot of my website on my smartphone. As you can see you can’t see the searchbox. It is there but a smartphone does not show it.

I don’t know a lot about smartphones. I know enough about them to know I don’t like them. They remind me of a Chevy El Camino or Ford Ranchero. The person could not figure out whether they wanted a car or a pickup truck so they got a Ranchero or El Camino and therefore didn’t get a car or a pickup truck.

Anyway … I could not help this person … not immediately, that is. Later after I learned about this I was able to help her.

I have a nephew who is very knowledgeable of anything computer related (inside of it or its operation). I turned to him for help. He told me to simply turn the phone 90 degrees holding it sideways. Of course, that feature has to be turned on in Settings in order for it to work. It is turned on in my phone so I did as he said  and I could see more of what is there, but I still could not see the search box. From there I figured things out for myself and within a few seconds of making some changes in the smartphone’s Display Settings the search box appeared on my screen. The only thing is it was too small for me to use it with my poor eyesight. Yes, I had to change the Display Settings to a smaller size and smaller font size.

Below is an actual screenshot of my Android smartphone being held sideways. As you can see now the search box is visible on the far right.

Anyway, it can be done, but I will take my desktop computer any day. I never had any desire for an El Camino and don’t have much use for smartphones. I know I would not be constantly changing my Display Settings just to view websites properly. I rarely view any websites on my smartphone. I feel sorry for those who only have and use a smartphone for everything on the internet. And then there are those who have the attitude and thinking of “with a smartphone I have no need nor desire of a desktop or laptop computer”. It is their loss in my opinion.

In the picture above from the James Bond movie, Goldfinger, this Ford Falcon Ranchero would be grossly overloaded if it really had a full size car compacted into this small size sitting in the bed of it. I am reminded of the true story of a guy with a Ranchero who went to a gravel pit to get a load of small gravel stone. He waited his turn and when the operator of the front loader got to him he told the operator to dump a  bucket load in the back. The operator asked him “Are you sure that’s what you want?” He said, “yeah, dump it in”. The next thing … all four tires blew out and the Ranchero was all the way down sitting on the ground. I think the payload for both Ranchero and El Camino was only 600 pounds. His personal theme song had to have been “what kind of fool am I?”

I can’t imagine trying to compose this article only using a smartphone. They have their good points and uses but just don’t compare to a real full size computer. Maybe if you have really good eyesight you can use your smartphone with really small Display Settings. And my fat fingers just don’t work very well with that small keyboard.

I am sharing about this because having the search box to use is an extremely handy and useful tool. You can quickly and easily find all sorts of things on TadpoleRider.com with it.

Also all the other links on the side are very useful. In the captured screenshot image above you can see the column on the right. I made the screen display as small as I could trying to capture as much of it as I could, but it goes on and on far more than what you can see in the picture.

Here is a quick video scrolling vertically so you can see all that is available on the far right side of the website. If you use a smartphone to view my website it is likely you have never seen any of this before.

Not only is there a search box, but there is also links to pages I have created, recent posts, archives listed by each month and lastly, categories to help in finding articles about things the reader is interested. There is also an email signup to subscribe to TadpoleRider.com and a “Follow me” button as well as my email address to contact me. Oh yes, I almost forgot. There are also links to the Most Recent Comments.

A VISIT TO THE HOME OF THE CLASSICS – AUBURN, INDIANA

Recently I rode my trike from my home in Fort Wayne up to Auburn, Indiana, known as “Home of the Classics” because of all the old classic cars that are found there often. There are museums, parades, auctions and displays of classic cars on the downtown streets.

The future Poka-Backe Trail is shown by red line in photo above.

The Auburn Cord Duesenberg  Museum (ACD Museum)(shown above) is well known. Visitors from all over the world come to Auburn to see it and the many classic cars that appear in Auburn at certain times of the year. The museum is located in the same building where they used to be sold. It has a second story also used to display  these collector cars. There are actually 3 automotive museums in Auburn. There used to be a 4th museum (Corvette Museum) as well as a WW2 museum. They are both gone now.

Auburn was once a manufacturing hub for early cars and, of course, the well known Auburn automobile was among them. Auburn was once called Little Detroit. Yes, Auburn has a very rich car history.

I know Auburn pretty well as I was born and raised there and in Garrett, an even smaller town about 5 miles southwest of Auburn. Auburn is a nice small town although it has grown considerably since I grew up there. With its growth has come a lot of changes and new things. One of those things is a bike trail known as the Rieke Park Trail   shown in red in the image below. The blue line is the Auburn-Waterloo Bike Path which will be used as part of the Poka-Backe Trail along with the Rieke Park Trail. Another part of it is the glorified sidewalk along Betz Rd. shown by  broken line.

I have known of its existence for a few years now but I had never been on it. In my recent posting about the Pufferbelly Trail here in Fort Wayne I talked about it being part of the future Poka-Bache Trail which is a rails to trail project and will be the longest in the state of Indiana … 81.3 miles going from near Bluffton to north of Angola to Pokagon State Park. It will pass right thru Auburn right in front of the ACD museum.

So yesterday I rode up to Auburn and rode in the stretts alongside of these wide “glorified sidewalks”) to check out what this future trail will offer. It connects to the Rieke Park Trail as part of the trail going up to Pokagon State Park. When I turned onto the Rieke Park Trail I was pleasantly surprised as it was as nice of a trail as I have seen or ridden on.

It is only 1.2 miles long however but it sure is nice. It had very smooth asphalt pavement and most of it is very well shaded. While there I encountered a woman out walking her dog and we struck up a conversation in which she told me about the nice paved trails available to ride on at the former Greenhurst golf course which is now called Greenhurst Park. She was referring to the golf cart paths. So after my ride on the Rieke Park Bike Path I rode on over to check out what she had told me about. In the image below Rieke Park Trail is shown in red. Another glorified sidewalk is shown in blue. The Auburn-Walterloo Bike Path is shown in yellow. Greenhurst Park is at the bottom of the yellow line.  The Auburn-Walterloo Bike Path is the continuing trail utilized for the Poka-Backe Trail going to Pokagon State Park.

I thoroughly enjoyed riding around Greenhurst Park on the former golf cart trails. It made the ride more worthwhile than just riding on the short Rieke Park Trail would have been.

Labor Day weekend is the busiest time for the Classic Cars so if you are interested in them it is a good time to come. Be warned however, the city becomes a very busy place. As a resident of Auburn it was always a good time to leave the area so I didn’t have to deal with it. I had my welding business there however and usually had  extra business welding on trails and the cars themselves. I once welded the broken off left front axle on a Mercedes Benz armored car that used to belong to Hitler. It was being auctioned off and I got called to go to the museum building to repair it. The armored car had a bullet hole in the bullet proof rear door  window.

I had a 58.6 mile ride on my trip up to Auburn and back. I ran both of my batteries down to the 20 % level. I just had enough battery to get back home. I turned the power down quite a bit of the time on my 2nd battery to conserve power in it.

BTW, I have ridden up to Auburn and Garrett on my trike about six time previously. It is true … you can never go back home. It is just not the same as I remember it and I never see anybody I know.

MY BEST DAYS MAY BE BEHIND ME, BUT …

Yep, I am getting old … going on 76. My best days may be behind me, but riding my trike nearly every day helps me keep going and looking forward to each passing day. Trike riding definitely adds fun and enjoyment to life and even some excitement … sometimes more than I really was wanting.

I came up alongside a fellow tadpole rider today. He was riding along at 15 mph without any e-motor assistance. I said to him that I was envious that he could ride at that speed without the help of a motor. His reply was right on … “I am younger than you”. Yes, I most definitely have slowed up as I age. I just am not able to ride anywhere near as fast as I could 20 years ago … not even 10 years ago.

I am so thankful for the e-motor which enables me to ride like the wind making riding enjoyable instead of misery like it would be without it. The breeze feels mighty good at 20 mph making it far more comfortable which equates to enjoyable. I can go out riding and not get all sweaty. It really makes a big difference.

Of course, I have no way of knowing how much longer I will  be sucking air. I am already living on borrowed time so to speak … anything beyond 70. I am hopeful that my health will hold up and permit me to continue to ride right up until near the end of my life or the Lord takes me in the rapture … whichever comes first.

My trike is now over 13 years old as far as the “running gear” and it is still performing like it did when it was brand new. Catrike sure makes a great trike. I am confident that it will continue to perform superbly another 13 years or more.

I retired at age 62.5 so I have 13 years of retired life behind me already. I jokingly said that upon retirement my job will be riding my trike and for sure that has been the case. I have over 102,000 miles on my trike. Almost all of it has been since I retired. That is an average of 7846 miles a year. I have slowed up not riding as many miles as I used to but I still manage over 7000 miles per year. I had some years over 10,000 miles early on. I still have a lot of 50 plus mile days. Of course, I could not say that without the e-motor assistance.

My first e-motor was in 2017. Since then I have had 7 e-motors. All have been rear hub type except for one crank drive. I am sold on hub motors and don’t care for crank drive motors at all. E-motors are an expensive addition to a trike. The motor I have now is the cheapest of all of them I have ever had. It is also the most powerful of all of them. I am really liking it and have no regrets having bought the cheapest one I found. They are all made in China and I think they are all of the same quality. I am hopeful this motor I have now will outlast me.  I reckon I will just have to wait and see. One thing is for sure … I definitely want to …

HELPING A FELLOW TRIKER IN TIME OF NEED

I am doing something I have never done before … asking others to consider helping out a fellow triker’s family in a time of need. The end of life comes to all of us sooner or later and sometimes it can be difficult and expensive. Many of us only have Medicare to help us in our old age and often times Medicare does not meet the needs we encounter. I know dealing with my own parents as they aged I watched as the government took all of their savings they had worked a lifetime for only to leave them paupers. In order to get help from the government my dad had to literally get rid of almost all their money when my mom’s health failed her and her care got very expensive … more than their savings could handle. Then when his end of life scenario came about the same thing happened. He was allowed about $68 a month for himself. Everything else went to the nursing home. Go Fund Me did not exist back then so it was not an option. Since its inception it has helped a whole lot of people meet a need. Our fellow triker brother has set up a Go Fund Me account for his dad to help with medical expenses as well the expense of his dad going into hospice care. Please consider what you can do to help. Here is a link to the Go Fund Me page … https://gofund.me/04c09898

Thank you for caring and doing what you can to help. STEVE

WHAT ARE PEOPLE MOST INTERESTED IN?

I started this website back in … hmmm … seems we have a problem here, Houston. I don’t know the answer to that as there is no information on it. I can only venture a guess and I am guessing it was about 2011. I use WordPress to compose and post this website to the internet. WordPress makes available statistics  on the website which is helpful and informative. I mainly look at which articles I have posted are most viewed, the number of viewers visiting the website and from what countries the viewers are from. Never the less there have been visitors from every single country in this world … something which surprises me. Of course, the U.S.A. is always at the top of the list of countries. I titled this “what are people most interested in?” In asking that I am, of course, referring to what they are viewing on this website the most. That is no mystery as WordPress provides the answer and here it is … this is all time. (They break it down to daily, weekly, monthly quarterly, yearly and all time since the beginning.)  I don’t know if these results will surprise you any. Some of them do me while others are ones I would guess would be about where they are on the list. This listing is for the most viewed starting at the top to the least viewed at the very bottom:

I just thought of something. I have been posting the “From the archives” on several Facebook Recumbent Groups for some time now. This has made a big difference in these numbers of views.

Here is a partial list of the countries viewers are from.

You may not have any interest in this but I am sure at least some people will. Besides, I had to come up with something to post here today and this is what popped into my head. And now that I have  guess what … it is that time … time to go for a trike ride. Hopefully next time I will come up with something more to your liking.  This even bores me some. Meanwhile …

NOW HEAR THIS AMERICA … TAPS

Those who have never served in the military may not know much about TAPS.  I served in the U.S. Navy and there are some differences between the various armed forces. In the  Navy at the designated bedtime (2200 … 10 PM) it too is called TAPS.  Tomorrow is Memorial Day, an American holiday set aside to observe the men and women in military uniform who gave their lives in service to our country. The TAPS song consists of 24 notes traditionally played on a bugle or trumpet. It is such a powerful song which has always touched my heart years before I went into the Navy and still does to this day. I am 75 years old and this is the first time in my entire life that I even knew that TAPS has words to it.

And I don’t think I have ever heard the origin of TAPS before.

This next video got my attention …

Stop drinking and return to quarters …

I love my country and I appreciate our military …I

I don’t have any musical talent at all but I sure would love to be able to play musical instruments and sing well.

Lastly I salute  all of our military …

To those who served and came back home … THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE …i

I leave you with a bit of humor. (Please humor me, I was in the Navy.) And please be aware that this joke is far from scriptural.

A soldier, a sailor, an airman, and a marine get into an argument about
what armed force is the best. The argument gets so heated that they fail
to see an on-coming truck. They are hit and killed instantly. When they
arrive in heaven, they see Saint Peter at the Pearly Gates. So they
decide he can settle their argument. They walk up and ask him, “Saint
Peter, what Military Service is the best?” He thinks for a moment, then
says, “Well, I’m afraid I can’t tell you. But I’ll tell you what. I’ll
talk to God next time I see Him, and I’ll find out for you. In the mean
time, welcome to heaven.” So they enter. Later, they see Saint Peter
while walking around, and they ask him about their question. But before
Saint Peter can say anything, trumpets blare, a bright light shines, and
a white dove flies out of the light with an envelope in it’s beak. Saint
Peter says, “Ah, here’s the answer from the Boss.” He takes the letter,
and the dove flies off. He opens it, trumpets play, gold dust flies up,
and Saint Peter reads aloud:

FROM THE DESK OF GOD

TO: SOLDIERS, SAILORS, AIRMEN, AND MARINES

RE: WHICH SERVICE IS BEST.

Dear Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines,
All branches of the United States Armed forces are truly honorable.
One should take pride in serving with the Military. You are all
well-trained men, all capable of pulling off your job exceedingly well.
Therefore, there is no superior service.

Sincerely,
God, USN (Ret.)

FACEBOOK GROUPS FOR COMRADERY & HELPFUL INFORMATION & INTERACTION

Finding a Facebook Group about recumbent tadpole trikes is about like trying to find a cold medication at the pharmacy. There are just so many to select from one is overwhelmed. And, of course, some are better than others. Some are far better while some are not so good. I am not here to make recommendations or rate any of these groups. Obviously it is not practical to join a whole lot of them. One thing I will say … just because one group has over 7000 members while another group only has 123 members is not necessarily a sure way to select a group. One would think it would be and should be but my experience tells me otherwise.  One thing I have learned the administrator(s)/moderator(s) make a big difference. I quit one group because I could not tolerate the lousy job the administrator was doing. I found I had no use for the guy. Constantly butting heads with him I finally had enough. I miss the group but I sure don’t miss him. Facebook groups need rules that everybody needs to abide by. There are always those who won’t and don’t obey the rules and thus cause problems for the group. A good administrator stays on top of this and disciplines members or removes them from membership. In these groups one will find seasoned knowledgeable experienced trike riders who can and do share what they know with others who are newbies or just not as experienced and knowledgeable. Those who have questions and issues can get help in these groups. I highly recommend joining a few. I have two Facebook groups I have started concerning tadpole trikes. I even have a third group which is on Cloudhub which is an alternative to Facebook. Cloudhub just never caught on. My Cloudhub Recumbent Trikes Group only has 4 members. My first Facebook group I started years ago was Tadpole Rider Group. It quickly grew to the second largest FB groups about recumbent trikes. Due to health reasons at the time I made the decision to shut it down. Years later the health issue no longer existed and I made the decision to restart it. This time around, however, it never took off like it did the first time. Over the last few weeks it (Tadpole Rider Group)  has doubled in membership but still it is only about 283 as I type this. There would be more but one ongoing problem I am experiencing is that several of those wanting to join are not answering the two vetting questions as well as agreeing to obey the group rules. Without this they won’t be approved to join. I hate turning away people who want to join but it is necessary to have these questions to help weed out SPAMMERS, ROBOTS and other unwanted applicants. If you are a Facebook user and don’t belong to a FB trike group at this time I invite you to look into it. You can simply do a search on FB for recumbent trike groups. Enjoy the interaction with fellow trikers. And most certainly …

IN OBSERVATION OF MLK JR HOLIDAY

Note- My apologies for the appearance of this post. I worked hard to lay it all out right but for some reason it refuses to post the way I have it laid out. The video I have embedded is suppose to appear much further below but it is clear at the top blocking the title of the post. No matter what I attempt to do it won’t change.  BTW, the title of this posting is OBSERVING MLK  jr HOLIDAY.

The city in which I live, Fort Wayne, Indiana, was built on the confluence of 3 rivers. The St. Joe River  flows in from the north. The St. Marys River flows in from the south and then turns east and joins up with the St. Joe River where it continues east and the name is changed to the Maumee River. Our original trail system was built alongside of these three rivers and is called the Rivergreenway.  Of course, having rivers means having bridges to cross the rivers. Traffic flow into and out of a city with rivers is limited by the number of bridges available. One of our main north-south streets underwent closing the bridge several years ago to totally rebuild it. Of course, that was a major inconvenience but once the project was completed and the new bridge was opened for use it got everybody’s vote of approval. The new bridge is quite nice. It was dedicated to the late Martin L. King, Jr.

Here is a video of a tadpole trike ride over the bridge and thru  the east side of Headwaters Park in downtown Fort Wayne. Several of Mr. King’s quotes are displayed along the length of the bridge.

As seen in the video  the bridge is capable of displaying various lighting at night making if very attractive.

THE ONLY REASON

Tomorrow as I post this is December 25th. It is the day when most of the world pauses to one degree or another to acknowledge the fact that God came to earth in the form of a human Baby on a mission to provide a way for man to be saved from the consequences and penalty of his sin. Man can not save himself although many try. That Baby grew into a Man and completed the mission He was on. Unlike us He lived a perfect life free from sin. This was most important as He was to be the sacrifice offering for sin … the only offering acceptable to a holy God. You can read more about all of this in great detail HERE . Sadly the world (most of mankind) has rejected this salvation God offers to us. Doing so comes at a very high price as our eternal soul is at stake. God offers us this FREE GIFT of His salvation, but for all those who reject it and ignore it they forfeit the opportunity He offers to be forgiven of our sin and we then must pay the penalty and answer to Him in judgement. God is love and He demonstrated His love for all of us by dying a cruel agonizing death in our place. His love is AIMED AT YOUR HEART. He has done all that is needed and all that He can and will for us to be saved from our sin. The choice and decision is ours. Once we breathe our last breath it is too late to choose Him and receive His gift of salvation. Our fate is sealed. So I ask you … if you have never responded to His invitation … WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH JESUS? Someday your heart will be asking … WHAT WILL JESUS DO WITH ME? The answer to that question can be readily found in His written word … the holy scriptures. God is holy and can not allow sin in His presence. We as sinful people have a problem. Our eternal soul will spend all of eternity either with God (if the sin problem has been taken care of) or apart from God. Being apart from God means spending eternity suffering in anguish in hell fire. God has warned us. We are free morale agents. God created us with the ability to choose to do what we want. We have free will. We are not robots preprogrammed by God to do what He wants us to do. There would not be any expression of God’s love in that. Recognizing and responding to God’s love for us loving Him in return is the ultimate expression of love. It is not a matter of obeying God because we have to. It is all about obeying God because we want to … we want to please Him out of a motivation of our love in return. Yes, God demonstrated His great love for us while we were yet sinners … in the very act of sinning and rebelling against Him … Jesus Christ died for us. Therein is love!

I know there are those who will read this and get upset over it. There will be those who want to tell me it has no place here on a blog about tadpole trikes. But you know … none of that matters. There is not a more important message to communicate to others than this message. In obedience to God I am willing to ruffle a few feathers upsetting some. This timeless message may touch a few hearts and that is what matters. So on this Christmas Day I present the Christmas message. It is not about the many things man does at this time of year … putting up an evergreen tree and decorating it, giving gifts to one another, feasting together as family and friends or any number of the things man does during this holiday. The truth is most everything man does is based on paganism practices the Roman Catholic church brought into our culture. And no where in the holy scriptures are we commanded or instructed to observe the birth of Jesus Christ. And He wasn’t born in December anyway. With all of this being true it is important not to “throw the baby out with the bath water” so to speak. This Christmas holiday does exist in our culture so I for one intend to take advantage of it and proclaim the message of the Cross of Jesus Christ. The reason for the season is truly all about the fact that Jesus did come to earth to provide salvation. He came the first time as a helpless Baby. He will be returning soon … very soon … as the King of kings and Lord of lords. His word tells us that He is coming to pour out His wrath (His anger) on all of those who have rejected Him and the salvation He alone offers. Far better is it to accept and respond to His love now than to be the recipient of His anger later. We are without excuse if we fail to respond to His great love while it is being offered and is available to us. Time is short. Besides none of us know what a day may bring forth. Our last final breath could be seconds away. It is all a most serious matter. The greatest gift is not one placed under a tree. The greatest gift is the One Who was placed on a tree. His Name is Jesus. Merry Christmas to all!

Heaven or Hell … it really is your choice.

This song says it all …

Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS and thereby miss out on the salvation our loving God is offering you.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Today, our nation has set aside this day to give thanks for all of the blessings in our lives. I hope that each of us will set aside some time today to give thanks and praise to God! I also want to encourage you to go one step further, and take some time every day to thank God for every blessing, every test, and every challenge in your life as He uses them for your good and His purposes.

One can find and read a lot about the first thanksgiving and much of it claims it was much different than what we were taught in school. I am not going to get into all of that. Whatever happened happened. It is past history and we can’t change it. The important thing is what we do today and into the future.

TIME MARCHES ON … THINGS KEEP CHANGING

It sometimes amazes me how much things change. I was reflecting back on an earlier time (in the 1970s) when I worked at a factory which built what is commonly called “cherry pickers”. A more proper name was mobile aerial work platforms. I knew that sometime after I left there they went out of business. I didn’t know until today that they had filed bankruptcy. I remember the street they were located on and I tried looking the address up on Google Maps street view only to discover there is no trace of them ever existing. All the buildings and parking lots are gone and everything looks entirely different today. It all looks very nice today … far improved over what it looked like back then. It is all past history with nothing to show for it.

Why am I sharing all of this you ask? It has nothing to do with tadpole trikes. And to be honest I don’t know if I can make a connection. I would imagine that there are trails that go thru or by places that have changed drastically over the years. I guess I have seen minor changes but nothing comes to mind which qualifies as major drastic changes here where I live and ride. Well, bite my tongue. I just told a big lie. I forgot about downtown in the city of Fort Wayne. Some major changes have and are happening.

Has the scenery changed over the years where you ride? Where I ride it depends upon where the trail runs. If it is near downtown in the city it has changed considerably and continues to do so as some major construction and development is ongoing. But if the trails are away from the city  things are not as likely to change.

I can honestly say that one thing that has changed is me. I am getting older (almost 75) and this body isn’t as spry as it used to be. It has slowed down some and it can’t take the cold weather as well as it could several years ago. I can remember riding in shorts in temperatures in the 40s. I sure would not do that now.  I used to be a Greenway Ranger … a volunteer helping the city trail management by being their eyes and ears out there on the trails and helping keep the trash cleaned up. I stepped down from that a few years ago. I still do everything I did before with the exception of cleaning up people’s trash. I got tired of that. I am glad to be able to report that the trash problem doesn’t seem to be as bad as it used to be.

Well, like ol’ Forest … “that’s all I’ve got to say about that.” Like another thing that comes to mind … CHANGE HAPPENS!  Hang in there and …

THANK YOU MILITARY VETERANS

Yes, freedom is not free! I know first hand the cost of freedom and am most thankful each and everyday that we have men and women … and even dogs who serve in our military to ensure our freedom. Today is Veterans Day … a national holiday in the United States whereby  we honor those who are serving or have served.

So I salute my fellow veterans …

Yes, I was looking downward in this picture but for good reason …

My friends’ young son had on a navy uniform and we were saluting each other. I was home on leave for the Christmas holiday. Most holidays I was aboard ship so I can identify with the first picture above.

Memorial Day is the holiday we honor fallen veterans but I see nothing wrong with doing so on Veterans Day. A whole lot of those who served never made it back home other than in a flag draped coffin.

As sad as this scene is I can’t help but think about politics and the senseless loss of so many lives. It accomplished absolutely nothing. Ever since Korea we have been playing with the lives of our military men and women (and yes, dogs too). It is quite shameful. I am so thankful that those who are responsible for this will face final justice when they stand before the Lord Jesus Christ and give account for all they have done. They are confident that they will get away with what they have done but they will have a rude awakening.

Of course, that is true of all of us. We will all stand before Jesus and give account … not only for what we have done, but for what we haven’t done that we could have and should have. We will also give an account of every word and every thought we have ever had. We are in big trouble as we all are guilty of falling short and missing the mark. That is why we need salvation. We stand guilty and in need of forgiveness. In God’s great love for us He did not leave us in this predicament. He made a way for us where there was no way. He Himself left heaven and came to earth taking  on the form of man. He was born as a baby human thru a miraculous birth only He could perform. It had to be this way as if He would have been born of man like you and I are He could not have provided the salvation we need. He would have been sinful just like you and I are. But that baby was born sinless because He was born of God not man. That is good news!

No, the freedom that we enjoy is not free. It cost dearly and we all need to be so thankful that there are those who were willing to pay the price.

Our veterans made/make it possible for us to enjoy our freedoms and blessings.

Likewise, salvation isn’t free. A very high price was paid for it. It didn’t cost us. It is free for the asking. But we must ask in order to receive it. Without the shedding of innocent blood there is no forgiveness of sin. It was God’s own innocent blood that was shed for us that make it possible that we might be forgiven. God offers His FREE GIFT to us. What will you do with Jesus Christ? Someday your heart will be asking … What will Jesus do with me? Today would be a perfect day to receive the  FREE GIFT He offers you.

Past and present day military pay honor to fellow veterans …
