While riding along the Maumee Pathway this afternoon (4/27/2020) I passed another tadpole rider going in the opposite direction. We waved at each other but didn’t stop to chat. I had noticed that he was loaded down and pulling a trailer. I got up the trail a little way further and decided to turn around and catch up with him. As I came up behind him he pulled over to the side off of the trail and stopped. I did the same and we sat there talking together for about an hour getting a little acquainted. For the past 2 and one half years he has been crisscrossing the United States riding his yellow Catrike 700 loaded down and pulling a trailer. He said he is on his 6th journey at this time. He is headed back east now. He is from New Jersey. It was neat meeting up with him. He has lots of stories to tell. I told him about my having this blog and asked his permission to write-up an article about him to post. William said that he is 58 years old (if I remember correctly). He shared with me that he was interviewed by Gary Solomon of LaidBack Bike Report. HERE is that interview. Gary interviewed him when he was in Utah headed to Washington on his 5th journey crossing the nation. He had started out his 5th cross country journey in Orlando, Florida where Catrike had just replaced his original red Catrike 700 with a brand new yellow 700 as a serious mechanical problem had developed.
William told me that he is looking into adding an electric hub motor to his trike so we talked a little bit about hub motors and batteries. As you probably know adding an e-motor to a trike is not cheap. He could definitely use any help others are willing to offer.
As we sat there talking I had to get on down the trail as I know he did so we parted company. I think we both could have stayed there alongside the trail talking for a lot longer but all good things must come to an end as they say.

I found it interesting what he said about this journey he has been on. It started out riding from the East coast of the U.S. to the West coast and then back again to get back home, but once he got back home he made the decision to just KEEP ON TRIKIN’ so now he is on number 6 crisscross of the nation. I surely wish him well and safety on his journey.
Face it, there is simply wisdom in trying as many trikes out before purchasing one. They are not cheap to buy and once they leave the store their value usually drops off considerably. Some dealers will work with customers if they are dissatisfied with their purchase but there is no guarantee of that. It can be risky business to buy a trike you end up regretting and facing the aftermath. So common sense dictates that we do our homework or should I say leg work (actually both) and go check trikes out riding as many as you can and if possible any you find yourself interested in taking a much longer ride on them as it may help you discover something that wasn’t noticed on a short ride. I don’t know how many dealers there are around which are willing to do this, especially if they don’t have easy ready access to someplace customers could ride from their store and be gone for an extended ride. I don’t know what their policies are as far as requiring a security deposit to take a trike out for an extended ride. That reminds me of a true story of a business neighbor I once had. I had a welding shop and he had an automotive transmission repair business. A guy came into his place of business asking to borrow a log chain. The business owner told him it would require a security deposit. The guy told the business owner if I had that much money I would just buy one. The business owner told him that if he didn’t bring the chain back he did just buy one. I fully agree with the business owner in his practice of requiring a security deposit of a sufficient amount to cover replacing the chain. So I don’t know if any trike dealers require a security deposit to cover the cost of the trike but I can’t say as I blame them if they do. Anyway, good hunting and may you find the trike that is just right for you.
I am sure some of you have seen people trying to sit themselves down on a tadpole trike and going about it all wrong. And for anyone who has physical issues such as balance, lack of mobility, etc. it can be dangerous to attempt if not being done properly. There are basically two ways to go about sitting down on a tadpole trike. One method is to step over the boom. The other method is to back up straddling the boom. Stepping over the boom can be quite dangerous and risky for some people, myself included, as they may misstep and trip themselves causing a nasty fall. As the saying goes, BEEN THERE, DONE THAT … AND DON’T WANT A REPEAT PERFORMANCE. So I always straddle my boom and back up. This video by Laid Back Cycles illustrates all of this as well as the assist bars which can be added to a trike.

RELIVE is a neat app. I first was introduced to it watching Matt Galat’s videos. It really caught my attention but I never considered actually trying it myself. My rides are rather boring … I ride the same trails every day with very little variation. So capturing the route I ride on a video just isn’t something most people would be interested in seeing day after day. Never the less, I decided to give it a try. Relive offers both a basic free version with limited features as well as a paid version which offers some goodies not found on the basic version. I believe the paid version costs $6.99 a month and offers a 30 day free trial. One feature I like on the paid version is you can change the speed of the video. The free basic mode goes way too fast for my liking.

I am not much into high tech stuff. I never have been. I much prefer simplicity in my life. I prefer to avoid the challenge, frustration and aggravation that comes with this high tech world we live in. I would not even have a smartphone if it wasn’t for wanting to have weather radar with me while I am out riding. I much preferred my simple flip phone as far as a cell phone. I started out with an Android phone but last year I switched to an iPhone. It did not take very long before I regretted it and nothing has changed. I much prefer an Android. Quite frankly I don’t see what all the hype is about touting the iPhone as being superior. It doesn’t impress me any whatsoever.
Anyway, Relive is available for Apple and Android. Reading about Relive and watching YouTube videos about it one would think that it has to be used with Strava or a similar app … that Relive is not a standalone app. However, I only installed Relive and it is working fine for me. It creates videos of my rides laying them out on Google Earth just like I have seen elsewhere such as Matt Galat’s videos.
It is rather interesting to see one’s ride recorded like this. I only wish I could work with this program on my desktop computer rather than having to do everything on my smartphone. I am still in the learning process as I have only been using it for three days thus far. I just learned today that you can take pictures while out on your ride and they will appear in the Relive video right where you took them.

Since YouTube and other controlled media will continue to stifle and snuff out the truth these videos I am posting will continue to disappear. UPDATE : It is now Sept. 2023 as I update this. And we are hearing that the globalists are about to release another round of Covid and their deadly vaccines on the world with more of the same stupid unscientific demands for all of us to follow. If enough people would just unite and say no, we won’t accept this … we won’t do what you want … they would be powerless to enforce it … force it on us.
Recently I was riding in a bike lane on a one way downtown street when I saw a guy on a bicycle riding in the bike lane coming toward me. Most bike lanes are not very wide so a serious problem was quickly developing. There is a natural scientific physical law most of us are familiar with … two objects can not occupy the same space at the same time. Something has to give. Yes, I was in the right of way. I was going the correct direction on this one way street. The bicyclist was going the wrong way. But ya know, the fact that the law was on my side didn’t really matter. We were about to collide and something needed to be done to avoid it. Fortunately there was no traffic nearby so I was able to ride over into the adjacent lane to avoid a collision.
Now I did not appreciate what this guy did. He was clearly in the wrong and in violation of the law. I guess what bothers me the most about this is how he conducted himself. He showed no sign of it bothering him. He will no doubt continue to do this sort of thing. I just hope he doesn’t end up causing injury or worse to others. Just one street over is another one way street going the other direction. It also has a bike lane and he could have and should have been riding there if he wanted to go that direction.
Why would he do this you might ask. I know it certainly comes into my mind. Surely he knows it is wrong and against the law. Surely he knows that he is endangering lives by doing this. He obviously doesn’t care. How can this be? How can someone be like that?
We as humans are an interesting lot. We not only come in all manner of shapes and sizes and even in a few different colors. We speak multiple languages and have numerous different cultures making us unique and different from each other. Yet in all of the differences that might exist we all share one thing in common. We are all born with a sin nature.
Most of know the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden where God their Creator came down to earth and walked with them each day. God gave them free reign in the garden with only one exception. He commanded them not to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. He warned them of the consequences of doing so. Like us Adam and Eve were created with free will. Like us they had the freedom to choose what they were going to do as well as the responsibility and accountability for those choices. In those choices we also face consequences. Adam and Eve were warned but they chose to disobey. In doing so the consequences were huge and to this day effect every human being.
Man’s disobedience did not end God’s great love for us. However, it did bring about a major problem. God is holy and pure while man had become sinful … unholy, impure. Yep, that is a problem. God can no longer have us in His presence. Our sin separates us from Him. So what can be done? Can we do anything to change this? Do we have it within our power and ability? I will give you a hint … God tells us that all of our righteousness is as filthy rags in His sight. We are helpless! We have a major problem indeed.
But God in His great love for us did something about it. I started out this posting talking about ONE WAY. This hasn’t changed. God provided the answer to our sin problem and He tells us that the provision He alone offers is ONE WAY. There is a video presentation explaining and illustrating His provision for us. In this life all of us are travelling along on a wide ONE WAY road just as is illustrated in this video. This picture illustration does an excellent job telling what happened in the Garden of Eden and the history of man. It covers from birth right up unto death. Look carefully at what is illustrated. Look at the faces of the people. Look at how humanity is all shuffling along and what is awaiting them up ahead. Look at their faces as they finally discover and understand their fate they are about to experience. It is too late to avoid it as they already went past the free love gift God offered them. As you watch this video you have two choices. You can harden your heart and reject God’s free gift like the one boy did. In doing so you will continue to shuffle along with the masses missing out on what God had for you. Are you among those who are riding during the Covid 19 PLANdemic? From what I have gathered not all states or local governments are permitting the public to go out for exercise during this time of planned evil thrust upon us. And in some places the trails are closed. Here in Indiana where I live outdoor exercise is being encouraged and there certainly are a whole lot of folks out there on the trails. Sadly all too many are not following the guidelines of staying far enough apart. And very few are wearing face masks to protect themselves and others. This man-made virus is truly dangerous and it can’t be known whether we have it or not unless we come down with symptoms. And at first we were told 6 feet is sufficient distance between people but now they are saying 20 feet. Furthermore they say that a sneeze can shoot the droplets out 27 feet so it doesn’t sound like 20 feet would be enough. To make matters worse it lingers in the air for a very long time … up to 4.5 hours I think I read. And then once it lands of surfaces it can last on that surface from several hours to several days depending upon what the material is of the surface. The bottom line is … be very very careful. Even in our homes we need to practice extra precaution than we normally do.
I know it is hard but stop picking your nose and sucking your thumb. Did I really say that?
I have been out nearly every single day. Today (April 8th) as I compose this is no exception. With warmer weather finally arriving I have increased the length of my rides. Today (April 8th) I rode 50 miles. I stlll had that recumbent smile taking place but no one could tell it as it was hidden behind a mask.
Yesterday was 60 miles … all with a mask on. I don’t mind wearing a mask in really cold weather but once it warms up enough so that it is comfortable outdoors wearing a mask is no fun. But it is better than going around unprotected like most people are doing. That ol’ recumbent smile is certainly going to waste, but hey, that’s okay. Maybe no one else can see it but I can tell it’s there. I can tell because I am enjoying my ride the same as I did the very first time I rode a tadpole trike. Some 88,000 plus miles later I am still lovin’ it.
I hope you are able to get out and ride where you are at. Do obey the governing authorities however. Even if you have to hide that recumbent smile behind a mask hopefully you can …

Catrike 700 … well known and quite popular. I have always wanted to ride one and finally I did a few months ago. Would I want one? No, they are not for everybody and I found they are not for me. But at least I can say I rode one. I have to admit I am rather amazed when I come across people older than me who ride one. One guy I saw riding one recently was well into his 90s. And he was moving right along too.
As you can see in the picture above I have crankarm shorteners installed on my trike. I am a short person and have short legs so shortening the crankarms is a god-send for me. Prior to getting the crankarm shorteners I purchased and installed some pedal extenders. I liked them but with the crankarm shorteners installed I don’t need to use the pedal extenders anymore because the crankarm shorteners do the same thing … positioning the pedals further out away from the crankarms. For me they are just the right amount so I don’t need to add pedal extenders in the mix. I know that the crankarm shorteners are not fabulous looking but they are quite functional. BTW, I have written various articles in the past about crankarm shorteners. Click HEREto read them.
And for those who take note that I am using regular BMX platform pedals with no type of foot retention … YES, I am well aware of the subject of “leg suck“. After all, I have written about it several times on this blog. I have tried SPD shoes and pedals but don’t care for them. I have also used heel slings which I like quite well. I used them for years but took them off and ride without them because truthfully I don’t need them. In over 86,000 miles of riding a tadpole trike my feet have come off of the pedals a few times but never have I had a problem with my feet going down onto the pavement. So I am not concerned about leg suck. If ever things change for me I will go back to using heel slings.

As I watch this video it backs up why I don’t care much for ICE trikes. Although the name ICE stands for “inspired cycle engineering” in my opinion ICE trikes are not very well engineered … at least somethings I could name here certainly aren’t. I have ridden a couple of them and looked at others and noticed these things about them. Definitely they all suffer with the same problem … namely it takes a football field to turn one. That is a slight exaggeration but only slight. This video shows and explains further the problems in the design of the steering. When I ride a trike I want to be able to turn sharply. One can get into big trouble when the trike won’t make a turn when encountered. That could be very dangerous. Trikes that won’t (can’t) turn sharply are poorly engineered and are dangerous to ride in my opinion. TerraTrike is another manufacturer which has models with indirect steering which are terrible just like ICE. Just because a trike has indirect steering does not mean that it can’t be engineered to turn sharp. There are other brands with indirect steering which do turn sharp … very sharp. I have a friend who rides a Trident with indirect steering and it turns sharper than my Catrike. It impresses me when it comes to steering.
Today is April 1st … April Fools Day. For those who don’t know what April Fools Day is … maybe you don’t have it where you live … it is a day where people play tricks/pranks/practical jokes on each other. We try to come up with something to fool them. Sometimes they are greatly fooled and what transpires is funny. My wife is a Filipino and she knew nothing of April Fools Day. Her first April 1st here in the U.S. she learned about it as I played a pretty good trick on her. I set all the clocks ahead 30 minutes and had her panicking thinking she was late getting to work. Of course, I let her in on my joke on her. Yep, that was her introduction to April Fools Day. That black eye lasted a long time. (only kidding)
Being April Fools Day I thought I would share about something that happened several years ago where a friend and myself were the victims of a prank which was played on us. (It was not April Fools Day when this happened.) We had taken our trikes via pickup truck to ride a ‘rail trail’ in north central Indiana. We stopped at a restaurant alongside the trail to eat lunch. There was no place to lock our trikes to so we used a cable to lock them to each other. We went in to eat and we asked the waitresses to keep an eye on our trikes for us as we could not since the dining area was in a part of the building from where our trikes could not be seen. The waitresses however were frequently where they could see our trikes. They said they would. After eating when we came back out both of our trikes were gone. Needless to say we panicked and were extremely concerned. We looked around a little bit when we saw a guy over on the nearby trail who was signaling to us. He had seen what was going on and pointed to where our trikes had been moved to. They had been taken back behind the restaurant and sort of hidden in between employee cars parked back there. With the trikes being locked together with the cable it took a few people to accomplish this as they would have to have been lifted together and carried the whole distance together. It turned out that the waitresses inside the restaurant had done this playing a trick on us. It sure worked. We were not laughing initially but the employees of the restaurant sure were. They had come outside to watch this. Definitely we were thankful for the man over on the trail who let us know where our trikes were at. In the end we laughed along with the employees.
