TRISLED FULL SUSPENSION TRIKE

Australia’s Trisled manufacturers a few different models of recumbent trikes including a side by side tandem. Here is one of their videos. I am not sure what language they are speaking as I can’t understand much of it.

ALIBABA.COM HAS MANY INTERESTING OFFERINGS

It is Christmas Day as I compose this. I was just sitting at my computer looking thru some old bookmarks when I came upon one for tadpole trikes on Alibaba.com. I clicked on it only to find no results. So I changed the search criteria to “recumbent trikes” and immediately discovered numerous pages in the search results. The only problem is the vast majority of the results have absolutely nothing to do with recumbent trikes. There are some however and all the rest of the stuff they show is still interesting. The problem is most sellers require the buyer to buy several of the same items. I don’t have any interest or intention of buying anything from them, but I enjoy looking thru all the listings of products they offer. I am very concerned when it comes to buying Chinese products as they are not known for quality and definitely have a serious problem with quality control in their manufacturing process. I enjoyed looking at the website, but now it is time to go for my Christmas Day ride.

SO YOU THOUGHT TADPOLE TRIKES ARE SOMETHING JUST RECENTLY INVENTED, HUH?

have written about this subject previously … “HISTORY OR RECUMBENTS” and NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN”. Many people are under the impression that tadpole  (or REVERSE) trikes are relatively new on the scene but they are very mistaken. I would love to post a picture of the first known tadpole trike but I dare not for fear of being sued.  The best I can do is provide a LINK to a webpage where you can see a picture of it. It says it was patented in England prior to 1876. Definitely it does not resemble anything like the tadpole trikes we have today, but by definition it is a tadpole trike with two wheels in the front and one wheel in the back.

HERE is a webpage where you can see some tadpole trikes from 1949.

One thing that needs to be made clear – – – there is a difference between the term recumbent and tadpole. A tadpole may or may not be a recumbent. A recumbent may or may not be a tadpole. Clear as mud, right? A tadpole trike or reverse trike simply means two wheels in the front and one wheel in the back. The word recumbent literally means laying down in the prone position.

By the true definition there are very few trikes that qualify as being recumbent. Yet people say trikes are recumbent when they really are not. I reckon that is just something we all have to deal with as it has become quite accepted.

That is about as prone position as you can get. Delta trikes (one wheel in front and two wheels in back) can be recumbent too although one does not see as many of them as they do tadpoles.

Only a few tadpole trikes are very reclined … 25 degrees or so. And many people don’t like leaning back very much so those trikes are not of interest to them. Some people want to sit very upright. They have various reasons for this. They may have physical issues where leaning back too far bothers them. They may want to see better while riding their trike. Some people just feel uncomfortable or unsafe leaning back. Of course, there are pros and cons to both. Leaning back makes for great aerodynamics. Such riders can truly say “what wind?”

Leaning back very far usually requires a neck/head rest for most riders.  Some riders have neck issues which require using a neck/head rest. I am one of them.

I have written about SEAT BACK ANGLE  before. And INCLINED TO RECLINE is another one. And HERE is yet another one.

I have always had a trike with a 45 degree seat back angle. I have always wanted to lean back more but could not with the trikes I have had. That is soon to change however. The Greenspeed Magnum SD has a seat back adjustment ranging from 30 degrees to 48 degrees so I will be able to recline more and see if I like it or not. I won’t be able to match the Catrike 700, ICE Vortex or Greenspeed Aero but I can come close. I will be reporting on it and many other things as time goes along.

Nope, tadpole trikes and recumbents are not a recent invention. Even the Japanese Mesa racers appeared back in the 1970s.

So don’t be ignorant about this matter. Afterall, there is nothing new under the sun. That is more than just an old saying.

came across this interesting webpage I want to share here. It is the history of recumbents. Lots of photos and information are found here.

It was the photo below that influenced me when I built my first recembent bike. I considered using this steering setup on it, but went with  a different type instead.

eZEE … HAS BEEN A WINNER

It has been just over two years since I bought and installed an eZee hub motor on my trike. I am writing about it now as a sort of a review. I am pleased to say that I have been very well satisfied with this motor. It has performed flawlessly. It is a geared motor which means that the nylon gears are suppose to be changed every 8000 miles or so. I have new gears on hand to do so as I am well past the 8000 mile point as I usually average about 8000 miles  or more a year. Last summer I opened up the motor with the intention of changing the gears but I found the gears inside still looked like brand new so I closed the motor back up and just kept riding. I was impressed. Being a geared motor it is a little bit noisier than I would like. My first motor, a BionX, was gearless and ran quieter so that spoiled me. One thing I like about this motor is that is weighs so little compared to some hub motors. The second hub motor I had, a Golden Motor Magic Pie Edge, was a whopping 19 pounds and was a monster to lift. This eZee hub motor weighs only 8 and a third pounds. With gears it can be made smaller diameter too which I like. Although it is rated at 1000 watts it is not the fastest or most powerful but it does a good job of moving me along. It is geared and designed to top out at 28 mph and that is what it does. I have had it up to 30 mph a few times on declines. My BionX motor was suppose to go 20 mph but it topped out at 17 mph. Oh, it would be fun to have a motor capable of propelling the trike along at 50 mph, but I would probably end up wrapping it around a tree or losing control and wrecking. So I am happy enough with what I have. At 73 years old I don’t need to live dangerously taking chances like that.

I feel that I should mention that I was not impressed with the aluminum rim that came with this e-motor kit. Of course, I have to say the same thing about the rims that came from Catrike. None of them have held up for me. I had to replace all of them with heavier duty BMX rims. They have held up great so far.

I have purposely withheld from making suggestions/recommendations to others when asked what brand of electric motor to purchase. Part of my reason for doing so is to is I simply don’t want to have someone buy a motor on my recommendation and then not be happy with it. I have not changed my position on this. However, I will readily say that I am very pleased with the eZee hub motor. It is my third brand of hub motor I have had after bad experiences with the first two. I have not missed out on any riding due to any problem with this motor. As I stated, it has been flawless. I am truly blessed and am …

RECUMBENT RACING

Anyone up for a race? Just 35 miles west of where I live is a small town where they have recumbent races. Here is a video highlighting some of the racing. I found it interesting that the tandems and the velomobile were not competitive at all. They got passed like they were sitting still. I thought the velomobile would be leading the pack followed by the tandems.

If I were younger I might participate in something like this. But, alas, I am now an old man and age has caught up with me. I am sure that this was a fun event for those who raced.

Quadcycle from 1987 Named “Carmichael”

Reaching back a ways here is a custom built pedal powered side by side quadcycle featured on a local TV station.

Unfortunately the video quality is not very good, but you can get the general idea of what this man made so many years ago. I have no idea if it was the first side by side quad ever made.

Here is the video description:

From the VHS video library of Steven K. Roberts comes this local news report of a mid 80s built side by side quadcycle. According to the piece this was designed and build by Norm Ogle with help from Peter Johnson.

If I were a younger man and not having the physical issues I have now in my elderly years I would be fabricating various tadpole trikes and quads. I made one tadpole trike back in 2007 and I was already challenged somewhat with vision problems then.

MATT GALAT’S WORLD TOUR

As many of you know a fellow tadpole triker by the name of Matt Galat is currently on a 5 year long trike journey around the world which started in China and is to end in Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.

UPDATE — Due to the Deep State’s fake pandemic (which I refer to as plandemic since it was all planned) Matt’s World Tour has been interrupted and he has had to make some major changes in his plans.

Matt is a videographer and creates excellent videos of his journey and life. He posts them on various social media … Matt’s FACEBOOK  page, JaYoe FACEBOOK page, Matt’s YOUTUBE channel, Matt’s JaYoe website, and more.

HERE is a map of Matt’s planned route.

Sometime back Matt added a drone to his video taping and it has added a lot to the quality of his videos giving them an altogether new perspective. His videos were always good and interesting, but with the drone footage added in they are even better.

Most of us could never take such a journey, but thru Matt’s videos we can truly enjoy and “live” his adventurous journey vicariously.

Matt rides a yellow HP Velotechnik Scorpion FS20 recumbent tadpole trike. He started out pulling a trailer, but decided to discontinue that and just haul those things he needs on his trike.

Matt had a set back in his trike journey. He had started it as planned riding a different trike pulling a different trailer when while still in China he was hit from behind by a big truck. He received a broken shoulder (collar) bone as a result and his trailer and trike were pretty much totaled. He had to convalescent for quite some time during which time he got reoutfitted in preparation of starting his world journey all over.

Matt has also experienced some knee joint pain which threatened his journey causing him to interrupt his ride for awhile. Fortunately now that he is back underway so far his knee has held up pretty good and he has been able to continue his journey.

Matt has coined the Chinese words (phrase) “JaYoe” for his journey … as it means “to add fuel”. As time goes along more and more people are discovering Matt and his trike journey. Great interest is building and his story continues to capture the attention of local news media.

I have written articles about Matt previously:

FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW WHETHER THEY ARE COMING OR GOING (B2B TRIKE)

Now I ask ya … how in the world do these people expect to get anywhere fast? I mean, they are pedaling in opposite directions, right? I mean, anyone can see that. For those who don’t know anything about these tandem trikes two or three of them were made (I have seen both figures). Great Britain’s ICE trike manufacturer made them. I would think it would take some getting used to facing backwards and have the trike going the opposite direction you are looking.

CHINESE KNOCKOFFS

chinese-catrike-knockoff
Would you buy a brand new “Catrike”
like this for about half price?
China has long been known for blatantly illegally copying products of others and selling them … often on the black market … at least many years ago. But today they are so bold as to even display a picture of the real McCoy with manufacturer’s name clearly displayed on it. Those who don’t know any better might be deceived and go ahead purchasing the item thinking they are getting a really great deal. Of course, what they get is altogether different. It may look somewhat the same externally, but the components used are el cheapo. And I am pretty sure that even externally there would be some obvious differences in the trike you would receive. Here is an example of what I am talking about. I think this is a picture of an older model (2012 or earlier) Catrike Trail trike. It is the non-folding “space frame” design (my favorite). As you can see it has the Catrike name shown clearly on it. I think sells for about $1200, but I am not sure of that as they don’t show the prices on their website. I have emailed them to ask what the price is, but they haven’t answered back. Anyway, that is less than half price of what Catrike sells their trike for today. I would think that the Chinese businesses involved in this illegal knockoff production would at least take a couple of minutes with a photo editing program and remove the manufacturer’s name from the picture they use. Better yet, why not just use a picture of the trike they are building and selling? Here is the Chinese website (one of them) where this is found:
http://www.made-in-china.com/…/hot-chi…/Recumbent_Trike.html
And here is the specific trike’s webpage:
http://www.made-in-china.com/…/China-New-Design-Hot-Sale-Re…
I know Catrike is aware of this, if for no other reason than the fact that I emailed them about it several years ago when I first discovered it.
ice-fat-trike
Does this not look like an ICE FULLFAT trike? It is another Chinese knockoff they are selling. No doubt it would probably look a lot like the ICE FULLFAT trike. Again, they don’t show any prices so I have no idea what they are charging for it. I am sure it is quite cheap especially when compared to the cost of a real ICE FULLFAT trike (about $5000 for the base model).
Chinese FAT tire trike 2
I wrote an article about another Chinese FAT trike. It is shown in the picture above. As far as I know it is not a knockoff though. It is a “mini-fat” … that is it has 20 inch FAT tires all the way around instead of 26 inch. It certainly is cheap … $1,460.93 total which includes shipping ($950 for trike & $510.93 for shipping).
Alibaba is another well known Chinese website selling lots of different Chinese made products. They show the prices and as far as I know are legitimate … they just sell cheaply made trikes like the FAT trike I wrote about and linked to above. I have not seen any advertised that I identified as a knockoff.
The prices are definitely cheap, but the shipping costs are pretty high so the total cost isn’t as attractive as it starts out.
So … back to my original question … would you buy one of these Chinese knockoffs to save money? I don’t think I could do it. I could probably buy one of the other Chinese trikes though. It is just the knockoffs that I don’t think I could deal with. Well, I don’t have any money to buy any of them anyway so I won’t concern myself with it. I am happy I was able to get the real McCoy and it continues to serve me well year after year. I do really miss my 2009 space frame though. I always …

HIGH TECH TRIKE OR LOW TECH CAR

velomobiles-lined-up-in-front-of-capital-bldg-in-d

recently came across an article about velomobiles which I found very interesting and well written so I am sharing a link to it HERE.

Here is the article’s opening paragraph:

Recumbent bikes with bodywork evoke a curious effect. They look as fast as a racing car or a jet fighter, but of course, they’re not. Nevertheless, thanks to the recumbent position, the minimal weight and the outstanding aerodynamics, pedaling a “velomobile” requires three to four times less energy than pedaling a normal bicycle.

The one thing I saw throughout the article which always bothers me when I come across it is their referring to a trike as a bike. That is like calling a truck a car … something very misleading and confusing. It is not at all “savvy”. I realize that there are velomobiles which are bikes (two wheels), but most are trikes (three wheels). Anyway, the article covers a lot of aspects of velomobiles and is informative.

https://etrike.wordpress.com/velomobile/

oceancycle-velomobile-for-ice-cockpitt-view-looking-forward

Every time I see this picture it reminds me of sitting in a jet fighter looking forward thru the windshield. I bet the jet fighter cockpit is a lot more comfortable to ride inside of than a velomobile though.

Yes, once again I was having a little fun with photo editing. This is probably as close as I will ever get to looking thru the windshield of a velomobile … at least from the inside looking out. 😉

DON’T BE SCAMMED WHEN SELLING YOUR TRIKE

delivery-truck-3

It seems that the further along we go in time the more we have to be concerned about getting “ripped off” is all too commonplace and those who are out to do such things unto us are becoming more and more inventive and sophisticated. We really have to be on guard to prevent becoming a victim.

I have had personal experience with this matter … not once, but several times. No, I have never been a victim of these unscrupulous  people, but many have attempted to deceive me and add me to their list of victims. Thus far I have been onto them and thus have avoided becoming victimized. As I said, they are getting trickier and treacherous. I have been trying to sell my wife’s recumbent bicycle and about three times so far I have had attempts made to get me to “sell” the bike to such people. I have also experienced this when I was selling my own 2 wheel recumbent bike and my homemade tadpole trike.

I am sure some of you are already aware of what I am talking about and knowledgeable of the ways these SCAMMERS operate. For those who don’t know about this it is very important that you learn about it. By the way, this isn’t just applicable to selling tadpole trikes. The item being sold can be any number of different things.

Here is how these SCAMMERS operate and what to look out for:

They make initial contact with you responding to an ad you have placed to sell your trike. They appear to be a legitimate interested party. They ask you if the trike is still available for sale and probably what your “bottom dollar” is you will take for it. You could tell them a price higher than they could go buy it for new and it wouldn’t matter to them. They offer to buy it at the price you are asking. Even if you tell them that you won’t release the trike to them until any check involved clears all banks involved they continue on communicating further with you disregarding what you said. They say that they will send you a “cashier’s check” and go onto to tell you that they will have a company truck in your area at a near future date which will stop by at the address you provide them to pick up the trike. You have their cashier’s check and they have your trike. What could possibly go wrong, right?

A cashier’s check is safe and there is no concern with them. That is only true when it is a genuine cashier’s check issued by a legitimate bank. There in lies the problem. Their check is phony. It looks good and might very well even fool your bank, but as it is processed you will discover that you are without your trike and have no money. To make matters worse, the latest ingredient I know of these SCAMMERS use adds “insult to injury”. They tell you that their check will be for a greater amount than the price of the trike. They are paying you more as you will need to pay the truck driver whatever the charge is for transporting the trike. So now you are not only out the value of the trike, but you just paid someone out of your own pocket to haul it away.

DAN MCGUIRE, AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY & A TRUE INSPIRATION

Note: I want to state upfront that when I started writing this article I was under the impression that this tadpole trike journey was still ongoing. It was not until after I completed writing the article that I discovered that the ride was completed in August 2014. I have made some changes in what I wrote in an attempt to try to reflect this, but I can’t assure you the reader that everything will be clear and accurate. I am still a bit confused myself. Never the less, I think you will find it an interesting story.

Dan McGuire 2

Dan says  ‘cycling is therapeutic and gives him purpose’.

Dan McGuire is a determined tadpole rider who indeed is an inspiration as well as a challenge to the rest of us. I think he is approximately 83 now. Dan is stricken with Parkinson’s Disease as well as arthritis, scoliosis and something weird with his eye according to his daughter.  She writes “Canada is his playground” and it sure looks like he is making his way around its vastness. He started this current journey in 2013. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’t in 2007. Dan has been a longtime cyclist with several accomplishments in the past. This was approximately a 10,000 km (6214 mile) trike ride he set out on at approximately 80 years old and he did it alone although others have accompanied him on parts of his journey.

map of Dan's journey

You can read his daughter’s article about him HERE.

HERE is another article about this incredible tadpole pilot. And HERE is another article.

Note: Although his journey ended in 2014 the following webpage appears to be still up and functioning as far as I know … And HERE is a webpage where you can donate on behalf of Dan to help Parkinson Society British Columbia. Their statement is that they are “there for those in need. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff is committed to offering support, sharing reliable information and raising funds for programs and research. We receive no government funding, so we rely on you. ” Dan has a personal goal set to raise $10,000 for this organization. On this webpage you can also leave a comment for Dan to encourage him and wish him well.

Dan McGuire 6

Upon further reading about Dan it appears that his journey across Canada was successfully completed in 2014. It just goes to show ya that you have to be careful what you read online. 🙂

 Dan McGuire finishes journey

Dan, I don’t know if you will ever see this and read it, but I just want to say thanks for your commitment and effort in raising awareness and demonstrating that life isn’t over just because one becomes affected by Parkinson’s Disease. Your journey was (and is)  indeed incredible and my hat is off to you. I don’t know your current status as to whether or not you are still cycling, but I sure hope you are and will be able to continue to do so for some time yet. You are an encouragement and inspiration to the rest of us to …
