FIVE THINGS FOR NATIONAL BIKE MONTH

May is almost over but fellow triker David Goldman managed to get this video out while it is still May. (I almost typed April.) As usual he has a good message to us.

As much as I want to be out there riding I can’t. I am stuck here at home waiting on a technician from Frontier FIOS to show up to fix our internet service which has been going out frequently for a couple of weeks or more now. They said it was my router going bad so they sent me a new router which arrived yesterday. I hooked it up and it doesn’t work at all. I went back to my old router and it is working perfectly. And here I sit unable to go riding. We are having 4 days of rain with very few breaks in the rain where I could go riding. Boo Hoo! I really want to …

TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT

As the saying goes … “been there, done that”… and have the surgical scars to prove it (as well as the Xrays). Knee joint replacement is a very common thing. However, I think it is safe to say that nothing man made can compare to what the Lord Jesus created when He designed us. I am quite thankful for my man made knee joints, but they don’t measure up to what I was born with. Anyway, here is a fellow triker sharing with us about what he experienced.

GOING FEET FIRST

One thing is for sure … sooner or later we will all go feet first as we all have an appointment with death. However while alive we have the choice before us to go feet first … riding a recumbent, that is. Many have already discovered the joyful pleasure and great benefits of doing so.

Yep, it is appointed upon man once to die followed by God’s judgement of us. There is no escape from it … no way to avoid it … no choice. But we do have a choice to ride a recumbent and by doing so experience so very many great benefits. They are far more comfortable than a conventional bicycle. They are safer, more fun and still offer great exercise which may even postpone your appointment with death. BTW, there is one way to avoid leaving this world feet first. That way is referred to as the “rapture” where those who belong to God  will be taken up off of this earth to meet the Lord Jesus in the air. That is going up “head first” avoiding death here on earth and going feet first. Meanwhile, my plan is to continue going feet first on my tadpole trike. If you have already tried it you know what I mean. If you haven’t tried it I invite you to do so. I don’t think you will regret it.

FRIKAR E-BIKE VELOCAR TRIKE

From the Norwegian makers of Podride their newest offering is this e-motor version. The problem is like their Podride the  Frikar is still  not available. It is only in prototype and not in production. They are taking pre-orders however. They show a production startup of Spring 2022. and actual availability in 2023.

Personally I would prefer Podride’s quad version as it would be more stable.

One thing for sure, whether 3 wheels or 4 wheels the rider is protected from the weather. Of cours,e being closed up inside of a velocar is quite uncomfortable in hot weather. It does say that the canopy is removable. In hot weather I would prefer not to be inside of any body unless it has air conditioning. Hey, they may offer it at some point in the future.

GREENSPEED MAGNUM RECALL

WizWheelz Recalls GreenSpeed Magnum Recumbent Trikes with Quick Release Axles Due to Crash and Injury Hazard’s. This is not the first time a recall has been issued concerning quick release axles. I always make sure mine are tight as well as positioned facing backwards so that they can’t catch weeds, tree branches, etc. Anyway, if you have a Greenspeed Magnum be sure to look into this.

INADAQUATE FENDER DESIGN

just arrived back home from a trike ride. It is misting out so the streets, sidewalks and trails are all wet. I have always had fenders on my trike. I would not care to ride without them. I get plenty wet with them. I would be totally soaked riding without them. Even with them I get pretty wet as water still is flung off of the tires and the fenders do very little to stop it. The outside of my upper leg and my hip area get wet as do my arms. The water goes thru 3 or 4 layers of clothing and my arms are constantly wet., especially my left arm

Above is a picture of my sweatshirt sleeve. You can see the wet area and some stains from muddy water which got splashed up on me.

The problem is very obvious … poor fender design. Most manufacturers just don’t care that their fenders are inadequate.. They just don’t care that their fenders don’t do the job. There is one exception that I know of and that is HP Velotechnik. The fenders for their Scorpion are excellent and are the way all fenders should be designed. So trike manufactuers … if you are paying attention … please care enough about your product to improve upon the  design. Your customers will appreciate it. I love my Catrike but I would surely enjoy it a lot more if I could ride it without getting all wet.

I ride a Catrike.Trail. I ordered it with fenders and at that time Catrike used the cheap plastic Planet Bike fenders. They would flop around like a chicken with its head cut off.

They were poor quqlity and the mounting system used was lousy. Finally Catrike came out with aluminum alloy fenders and fender mounts similar to what ICE trikes have.

This is a vast improvement over their previous mounts. So I ordered a set and installed them when they arrived. They are much better but I still get wet. I would love to see Catrike and other trike manufactuers offer fenders like the HP Velotechnik fenders I mentioned. Then I could ride on wet surfaces and not get wet. A fender set is not an inexpensive purchase and I don’t want to spend more money for another set of fenders, but I would if they were available. I thought of buying the HP Velotechnik front fenders but I don’ know if I could mount them on my Catrike or not.

Using wider tires such as Big Apple or Big Ben adds to the problems as the fenders are not made wide enough to accommodate them. But just being wider in and of itself would still not solve the problem. They need to come down on the inside like these examples. Then the water being flung off of the tires could not land on the trike rider.

If I were much younger I  might try fabricating my own or at least an add on piece which would provide this “wall on the inside”. Maybe I could make them and sell them. But alas I am an old man now and my fabrication days are far behind me. I no longer have my welding shop and all the equipment I had in it. Oh, I could still do the work, but my eyesight is quite poor making it very hard if not impossible or me to do a lot of things I used to do.

Here is a trike with homemade fenders which are unusually large to accommodate wide tires.

So unless Catrike and other manufacturers wake up and produce and sell fenders that actually work I guess I will just go on getting wet. It is bad enough when it is warm outside but getting wet in cold weather just is not all that pleasant and enjoyable.

STRANGE THINGS ARE HAPPENING … BUT I AM GLAD

Yes, strange things are happening for sure. I am talking about my eZee hub motor which is now over 4 years old and has over 50,000 miles on it. It has never given me a moment’s trouble. However, a few days ago while out riding I stopped for lunch at a restaurant several miles from my home. When I came back out to continue my ride as I took off I suddenly heard and felt something inside the motor break making a loud noise and then the motor just spun and the trike didn’t move. I kept trying the thumb throttle and every once in awhile things would work and the motor  would propel my trike. So I headed home and made it back okay. Of course, I was concerned about my motor and what had happened. The next day I got my trike out and discovered that things had changed. Now the motor worked every time and always propelled the trike. However, the clutch was slipping sometimes. I rode it and it did okay. It seemed dependable and the clutch was not slipping all that much. Since then I ordered another hub  e-motor. I removed my eZee hub motor conversion kit and installed the new hub motor conversion kit. It did not come with any installation instructions but I didn’t need any. I got it installed okay. It also did not come with any setup instructions and that was a major problem as I did have a  clue how to program the digital display console. I found what I needed to know more less online and printed out the instructions as well as took some notes from a couple of YouTube videos I watched. I got it programmed okay but it didn’t work right. It would only do 12 mph. I contacted the seller and they had me make a change in the programming in the digital display console. With that the top speed went down to 4 mph. I contacted them back and they had me make another change. With that change the top speed went down to 2.5 mph. I was so frustrated and upset. I made the decision to to uninstall the new motor conversion kit and reinstall my eZee motor kit. I took my trike out for a short spin around my subdivision obtaining a top speed of 30 mph. I contacted the seller telling them I want to send their e-motor kit back to them for a refund as I am very disappointed in it. It has been about 3 days and I haven’t heard anything back from them. I better be hearing something soon or I will be contacting Amazon and/or my credit card company. I sure wish e-motors were available which are made here in the U.S. and there were local sellers to deal with. Everything is made in China and it is a mess dealing with China. The eZee motor is also Chinese. Strange things have been happening with it. First I heard something break inside and the motor just spun. Then it finally started to work again and has quit just spinning. Right now it seems to be working pretty good. I can’t explain it. It makes no sense to me. Yes, strange things are happening, but I guess I can say that I am glad it is still working. The brand new one I bought failed to work and the seller hasn’t helped me get it remedied. China is not known for quality control in their manufacturing. I was glad that I was able to go back to my old motor. I just hope the eZee motor keeps on working as I want to …

I LIKE SAVING MONEY. HOW ABOUT YOU?

I don’t know about you but I like saving money whenever I can. Of course, I want quality for my money. A good price is not a good price or deal if it lacks quality. I have mostly bought Avid brand brake pads since I bought my trike. They are not inexpensive …. like$22 a set. A few years ago I came across some inexpensive brake pads made in China. What isn’t any more? And, yes, those $22 Avid brake pads are made in China. Anyway, I decided to try the inexpensive brake pads. I ordered several sets of them. It cost me about $2.50 per set. That is a huge savings … $22 vs $2.50. And the good news is they have been excellent quality … every bit as good as the Avid brand. I have been very well pleased with them. I just replaced the brake pads on my trike recently. I could have waited longer but I was pretty sure the right side was getting rather worn and I didn’t want to procrastinate and end up with  a metal to metal situation. Anyway I got 16,775 miles out of this last set so I got my money’s worth out of them. And I just ordered  8 more sets for $2.50 each. And that includes the shipping.

So what is the difference between Avid brand brake pads and  these inexpensive ones you ask? The best answer I could give to that is … $19.50 … that is the difference.

One thing I have learned is when shopping online for them not to jump on what appears to be the best price as if I wait and keep looking I always find them cheaper. I have had problems trying to order them from Aliexpress. I have been buying them on Ebay. Sometimes the price looks good but then I discover the shipping is considerable.

For what it is worth, I would not be at all surprised if many of these various brands of brake pads are made in the same factory. Years ago that was very commonplace in China.

Speaking of saving money, I like buying my tires for half of what most people pay for them. It can be done. I have done it for years.

Anyway, hey, I like saving money. How about you?

HOW TO OPERATE A CRANK DRIVE E-MOTOR

It is no secret … a crank drive motor is hard on drive trains. And if the rider does not know how to properly use that extra power being applied to the pedals the drive train can be destroyed quickly. Here is a video sharing advice on how to operate a crank drive e-motor.

Anyone using a crank drive e-motor would be wise to heed this advice. I was aware of what is shared here and followed this advice. My drive train was still quickly destroyed. Personally I don’t and I can’t recommend crank drive e-motors. After replacing badly worn parts of my drive train I went back to using my rear hub drive and much prefer it. My local LBS sells and services e-bikes including installing Bafang units on trikes. They say the same thing … a very simple truth … crank drive systems are hard on drive trains and they don’t recommend them.

INSTALLING A REAR HUB MOTOR KIT

My eZee rear hub motor came from Grin Technologies and I installed it myself. Here is a video showing the installation process on a bicycle. It is similar on a trike.

I did not need the torsion bar as the eZee hub motor does not have anywhere near enough power to need it.  I had to spread my rear dropouts further apart to fit the unit in. The wheel my eZee motor was laced into did not hold up. I had to replace it . I bought a much stronger BMX rim and had it laced up by a professional wheel builder at my LBS. It has held up fine. After my experience with BionX and Golden Motors I have been well pleased with the eZee hub motor.  And then when I tried the Tongsheng crank drive motor which greatly disappointed me the eZee was a joy to go back to. The only disappointing thing about the eZee is I don’t have pedal assist … only a hand throttle. Oh I bought pedal assist when I first got the eZee hub motor kit. I paid a lot of extra money for it and still had to pay more for a different crankset as my Catrike crankset would not work with the torque sensor. Then I paid more to have my LBS install the torque sensor for me (with my assistance) only to discover that the torque sensor didn’t work. Grin Technologies sent me a different one but it required an even different crankset which we could not find available so I never got the torque sensor installed. It was just a lot of wasted money and effort. So during the 4 years I have had the eZee hub motor I have only had a hand throttle. Now I have gotten good at using it … so much so that I can pretty well duplicate what pedal assist feels like. One thing about it just buying the hand throttle would have saved me several hundred dollars which I ended up wasting. My advice to anyone wanting pedal assist is to by a unit with it built in. The eZee motor does not have it built in and the separate torque sensor which goes into the crankset bottom bracket is not at all practical. If I knew then what I know now I never would have bought it.

BUT I DON’T FEEL LIKE GETTING GOING

The weather sure makes a difference in how motivated I am to get myself out riding. I guess it has to be this global warming thing. Yep, it is so warm that most days this Spring have been and continue to be below normal. I went out yesterday and nearly froze out there. I need to dress for winter weather not spring weather. I am waiting for it to warm up before leaving each day but there is a problem. It is failing to warm up. Even the warmest part of the day is several degrees below what is normal for this time of year. And to make matters worse we have had some “teaser days” with the high temperatures in the 70 and even 80s, but the very next day it is back to much cooler weather.

This obviously is meant to be funny but it is not far from the truth. Of course, it is based on computer life. I used to see a lot of this back when I used Microcrap … I mean Microsoft Windows. Years ago I switched to Linux Mint and all the headaches that come with Windows are gone. With Windows there was something gone wrong to deal with almost constantly.

Some of you live in places where you can identify with what I am saying. Well, April is almost over with. We will see what May brings in the weather dept. Right now I need to go bundle up as if it were still winter if I am going to go riding today. 65 degrees is the normal high for this time of year. We are having weather 15 to 20 degrees below that. And we have been having quite a bit of wind as well so the “feels like” temperatures have been like winter days. It gets a guy down and is hard to deal with. There are times when I wish I could kick myself in the butt. Instead I sit down in the recliner chair and soon may be dreaming about nicer weather. If I were a rich man I may be living down in Florida but then the daily high temperatures are already hotter than I care for. I bet they don’t have any freeze warnings overnight like we do.

There are places around where the weather is pleasant but they lack trails to ride on.. I am not afraid to ride on roads with cars and trucks but I definitely prefer paved trails. Smooth winding paved shady trails and 70- 75 degree weather … AH, perfect in my book.

                                                  Toledo, Ohio bike trail

Recently I was at my LBS (local bike shop) and talked with the service manager. He told me business has been very slow due to the lousy Spring weather we have been having. Normally they are quite busy at this time of year as people are getting their bikes ready to ride. I know I seldom see any other cyclists out on the trails when the weather is not so nice.

It will be interesting to see if we just sort of skip Spring and mover right into Summer. I certainly hope not but it has happened before. Nap time for me and then I will be bundling up to go out for a ride.

BIONX … OUT OF BUSINESS BUT STILL AROUND … WELL, SORTA’

I was very surprised to discover that even though the well known and popular BionX e-motor company went out of business a few years ago one can still buy their products. And the good news is the cost is about half of what it was originally. Of course, there is no manufacturer warranty or service available . How long these sources will be available is anybody’s guess. The source I was looking at came with everything except the digital display. If the customer wanted it it would have to be ordered separately.

Some parts are still available so there is a glimmer of hope for those who have a BionX system. I searched for BionX and found several sources to buy their motor kits. Some sources are even selling unlocked motors which will allow the rider to go faster than the 20 mph speed limiter built into the system. I would like that. One can also buy just the hub motor and have it laced into their own rear wheel. Both the 350 watt and the 500 watt motors are available. BionX had a good product but they priced themselves too high which led to their demise. There was a lot of competition coming on the scene for a lot less money. You can only get away with selling at much higher prices for so long before it catches up to you.

RAIN SNOW WIND & OCASSIONALLY A NICE DAY

It is that time of year. The weather is all over the place. One day can be in the high 60s and the next day only in the high 30s. Lots of rain but also snow coming down. And the wind … even on those high 60s days it is often quite windy. It makes for interesting trike riding. And definitely it is like playing Russian Roulette with our health as it is all too easy to get a cold and/or cough if we venture out for a ride. But I don’t let that stop me. Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead! Well, maybe half speed. We dare not ignore the wind chill factor. And there is yet another factor … a wife who forbids me to go out riding out of concern for my health. It is interesting that it is ok for me to go out riding on a winter day with temperatures in the 30s but come Springtime with fluctuating temperatures … nope … no can do. Sometimes I truly envy bachelors. Tomorrow is another day … just like I have been talking about … with below normal temperatures and definitely a bit windy. But hey, I am planning on going riding and do my best to …

ENJOY THE RIDE!

Yep, I am trying my best to  …

TIRES FOR LESS

One thing is for sure. Tires are a consumable. They wear out and need to be replaced. I am constantly coming across people who pay “full price” or nearly so for their tires. And some people don’t believe me when I tell them what I pay for my tires … often less than half of what they pay. I am no one special. I don’t get any better deal than what anybody else can get. It just takes a little bit of time and effort to find sources offering great prices. One person recently said that they buy their tires on Amazon as if that ensures they get the lowest prices. Actually I have never seen good prices for tires on Amazon or Ebay. And rarely do I see any good prices for tires on any source here in the United States. I have consistently found them from sources in Europe, especially Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom. Right now with the world economy such as it is with high inflation going on the tire prices are not quite as good as they were. However, one can still find some good deals. At this time the best I have found is Bikeinn in Spain. Some other sources I have used in the past are: BikeDiscount in Germany Bike24 in Germany Merlin Cyclery in United Kingdom. One more comes mind although they don’t always have as good of a price as these others. I am referring to BikeTiresDirect.com in the U.S.  Right now their price is $34.99 with free shipping.

Yes, there is oftentimes shipping charges to pay, but even with those charges figured in the price per tire is still a bargain compared to what one usually finds elsewhere. I have had people boast to me about the price they just paid for some tires. It was ten dollars or more higher per tire than what I have been paying right along. As an example … in the past for 20 by 1.75 Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires (47-406) I have typically paid $24 to $28 per tire including shipping. BTW, in the past at least one source offered free shipping on orders over $75. I always buy 3 or 4 tires at a time. Sometimes I order for a friend and save him a lot of money. You can easily see that if a certain tire costs $24 and there is a $22 shipping charge it is cheaper per tire to order 3 or 4 at a time. Otherwise one tire costs $46. Three tires would be $31.33 per tire. Four tires would be $29.50 per tire. I can’t say how many tires you can order for their stated shipping charge. The most I have ever ordered at one time was 4. I am sure if you went over a certain weight the shipping cost would increase. And speaking of shipping charges increasing … like everything else nowadays, yes, they are higher now. And as we know all over the world we are dealing with shortages and delays. Usually the sources I use have had the tires in stock but nowadays sometimes they are out of stock. Of course, at their low prices they sell a lot. Bike24 has a really good price on Marathon Plus tires right now ($22.70), but they are out of stock. That does not include shipping but since they are out of stock I can’t find out what the shipping is. The MSRP on the Marathon Plus tires is about $47, I think. Seems like it used to be about $54. It is hard to believe that they lowered it. Anyway, you can order them from Amazon for $47.54 saving 10% they say … or … you can wise up and stop paying full price or nearly so by doing what I do.

I do ask one thing … please don’t accuse me of lying to people about the prices I pay for tires. That more less happened recently and I didn’t appreciate it.

BTW, anyone who is interested in trying Vee tires Bikeinn has them really cheap … $4 to $8 per tire plus shipping costs. I could not believe my eyes as I looked thru their tires and saw those prices.

Oh yes, one last thing … service as in customer service. I have always been pleased with the service I have received from each of these companies I have dealt with. They usually send out the tires the same day or next day after ordering them. Occasionally they get held up in U.S. Customs longer than should be necessary. And, of course, right now shipping is delayed some all over the world. But hey, that’s life!

RESURRECTION SUNDAY

HALLELUJAH! It is resurrection Sunday! Three days passed by after Jesus was willingly hung on a cross spilling His precious innocent blood to pay the penalty for the sins of man and providing forgiveness for those who accept what God alone could and did do for us. He paid a debt He did not owe. I owed a debt I could not pay. I needed someone to wash my sin away. My life was in rebellion to the God Who created me and loves me. I had lived the first 30 years of my life in that rebellion totally rejecting Him. I went so far in my hardheartedness that I totally denied His existence. I was an atheist … unapproachable. No one could talk to me about anything spiritual. I was like this one kid in this Chick tract entitled One Way.

BTW, out of all of the Chick tracts this is one of my very favorites. It is almost all pictures and illustrates the truth of what has happened to mankind as far as sin entering the world and its consequences.

I have shared my personal testimony previously so I won’t rewrite it again here.

Anyway, if you are like I was … if you get upset when someone tries to share anything spiritual with you I understand … been there, done that … as they say. Just hang in there. If God can manage to get thru to you I assure you will have no regrets. He wants to set you free and help you to find Truth which will set you free. We are either In Adam (lost) or In Christ (saved). Here is the difference:

Accepting and receiving Jesus Christ wiil totally transform us from what we have made of ourselves into what God wants us to become and with His help we can become. Time is short. We are living in the very Last Days and the return of Jesus in imminent.

For more than 2000 years He has offered us His grace with the opportunity for our salvation. But that will all soon change. Procrastination is a very dangerous game to play!  First of all none of have the assurance of our next breath and heartbeat. Dying apart from Christ and what He alone can provide … the forgiveness of our sins …means that our eternal fate is sealed. Heaven or hell are real and they are our only two choices. And we have already made our choice. God knows our hearts. Our fate is already sealed. That being said, today you have the opportunity to choose Him and change your fate.

TODAY, if you hear His voice, do not harden your heart. You may never have another opportunity.

What will you do with this great sacrifice? Right now you have the opportunity to choose life … choose Jesus.

It is not complicated but it is quite difficult. It is hard because it involves dealing with our pride, humbling ourselves and repenting. We must come to God on His terms.

God has a free gift awaiting you.

A FREE GIFT awaits you!

Jesus loves you. He loves you so much that He stretched out His arms to hang on a tree just to prove His great love. Yes, He did this for you while you were still rebelling against Him. There is no greater demonstration of love to be found anywhere. We should …

If we live our lives like this we will most likely will be part of the next event known as the rapture of the church when Jesus comes back to get those He has redeemed. This will happen just before God begins His judgement upon the earth and those who will be here … left behind rejecting Him.

Don’t be left behind. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Jesus is returning soon! He came the first time to provide salvation. He is coming the next time to pour out His wrath and anger on those who reject that salvation.

RIDING FLAT FREE

Starting in 2009 when I bought my Catrike Trail which came with Schwalbe Marathon Racer tires I started experiencing numerous flat tires. From there I tried other Schwalbe tires … Kojaks, Marathons,  and Trykers. The Tryker tires were the worst of the bunch. With all of them I contained to have nemerous flats. Finally I decided to try tire liners which helped but I still got a few flats, especially “internal flats” … flats which were caused by something inside of the tire rather than a puncture or cut from the outside. It turned out to be the tire liners which caused the internal flats.

Finally I decided to try the tire I had been hearing about … the Schwalbe Marathon Plus. I made the foolish decision to use the tire liners inside of them. I guess my thinking was they add an extra measure of flat protection and I already have them so I might as well use them. Big mistake as once again I had internal flats. I removed the tire liners and never had anymore flats. I am sold on the Marathon Plus tires as being the best tire money can buy. They not only offer great flat protection but they wear excellent as well. I got phenominal mileage out of them.  I used them for many years until I decided to go the route of balloon tires. I knew of the Big Apple tires but upon reading about them I found out about the Big Ben tires. And with further reading I found out about Big Ben Plus tires. They too offer some flat protection similar to Marathon Plus but they offer  a lesser amount of protection. I decided to give them a try and have been using them since. I love them. I have never had a flat with them either.

I do use a heavy duty inner tube inside of them as there is plenty of room inside for them. They don’t wear nearly as good as the Marathon Plus tires but the ride and handling I really like. I keep reordering them so it is not likely I will change back to my beloved Marathon Plus tires anytime soon. Like so many things tire technology has came a long ways over the years.

Even some of the other tires like Marathons now have some flat protection built into them. It is so nice to ride and not have to deal with any flats.

CYGOLITE HOTSHOT PRO TAILLIGHTS

Thru the passing years I have tried a number of different headlights and taillights. Some were near the best available at the time I bought them but as time passed other lights came along which were superior to what I had already bought and had been using. That’s the way the cookie crumbles as they say. Or as a good friend used to say … “you’ll have that!” I have not been much of a fan of USB rechargeable lights for a couple of reasons … 1) the charge often does not last long enough and when it is depleted the light no longer works. It this happens in the middle of a ride it leaves you without a working light. And 2) I have experienced too much trouble with the USB charging ports going bad and the  charging cable plug no longer plugging into the light leaving me with no way to recharge it. So I have purposely stayed clear of most USB rechargeable lights. I do have  6 or 7 rechargeable taillights at this time. One of them is difficult to recharge because of this problem mentioned. Just today I received a new light to replace the one I am having trouble with. This is a  quality control problem in manufacturing as far as I am concerned. From brand new out of the box there were problems with the USB port. I like and want bright flashing taillights and headlights on my trike as I want to be seen. I rarely ever ride at night so I don’t need an extremely bright headlight so I can see where I am going. I just need lights that others can readily see in the daytime. Besides rechargeable lights I also have lights that run on AA and AAA batteries. For taillights I like the Niterider Cherry Bomb 35. I use my Cygolite Hotshot Pro 150 taillights as my main taillights but if they should fail during a ride I have the battery powered lights to use and I carry extra batteries along with me should they fail. Cygolite Hotshot Pro taillights are offered in different brightnesses. When I first bought mine the most powerful one they had was 150 lumens. Since then they have come out with 200 as well as 250. The 150 is plenty bright so I never bought a 200 or 250. They not only cost more but the charge in these models don’t last as long as the 150. I think they come in 50, 80, 100, 150, 200 and 250 lumens. I know one needs to be careful when shopping for them online. You may be looking up 150 but the search results often show other powers and you many not notice this when looking at the search results.

I have changed my light configuration several times over the years. Just recently I made a major change in the taillight dept. I removed all of the battery powered lights and just have the rechargeable lights now. Even the BV 35 lumen taillights are very bright and would do the job all by themselves. They are just smaller than I care for plus the charge doesn’t last long enough in them. They came free with my headlights so the price was right.

TAKING OUR K9 FRIENDS ALONG FOR THE RIDE

I used to take our dog with me on rides. Unfortunately that ended as he developed health issues and was suffering so we had to make the hard decision to put him down.

A few years have passed and now we have a new puppy. So far he is not taking to riding with me as well as our first dog did. Our first dog would ride in an open basket just fine but this new puppy can’t be trusted. He will jump out. So something was needed to ensure that doesn’t happen. I came across this Sunlite basket with a top cage on it. It is working great thus far but I am concerned our puppy will all too quickly outgrow it. Hopefully if that happens I can go back to using the other basket I have hoping he will ride in it and  no longer try to jump out. Time will tell.

This basket is made to mount on a rear rack. It has quick release spring loaded clamps that hold it onto the rack. Of course, this is only good for small dogs. If you have a larger dog then you will need some other way to accommodate him or her. Probably the most practical thing is using a trailer. But if this basket appeals to you there are several sources where it can be purchased. Modern bike advertises the cheapest but they add on a $25 shipping charge. Whatever you decide to do enjoy the ride and having your dog(s) along. And …
